New pc problems
I just put together a computer from various parts that I purchased, and after being completely assembled, I fire it up for the first time and the monitor doesn't even activate. What could be wrong?
My mobo and cpu are an xFx 680i LT SLI mobo with a q6600 core 2 quad cpu, and my gpu is an xFx 8800 gts. thanks. |

Follow the instructions there. Make sure you do it out of the case. Post back with the results. If it doesn't work still, then when you post back, include all parts with both make and model including the power supply.

I took it all out of the case and I'm still gettin nothing. Everything is getting power, so I don't think it's a power supply. I have the aforementioned parts, and then an OCZ700GXSSLI power supply and OCZ2N800SR2GK ram. any ideas?
I doubt this is the problem, but I don't have a DVI monitor and so I'm using the VGA adapter, and I don't know if you need to have the card installed before the signal will travel properly or whatever : \ at any rate, help pleeeaaassseee :'( |

Oh and one more thing, I ordered my parts online and the delivery man just left the parts on my porch in sub-freezing temperatures. just a sidenote...

I'm curious of the verdict because I was worried about temperature in my area as well it's like -3000 degrees here.

I believe as long as you let the parts warm back to room temperature for a day maybe for several hours, the parts will be fine.
Can you explain what's happening when you hit the power button a bit more? Are the fans turning? There are no error beeps or error messages from the motherboard? Are you doing this out of case?

Do a mem test, and check the pins under your processing chip, to see if they are bent.

If you have everything out of the case, and only the bare minimum, then the only true way to know what's wrong is through substitution.
If you have more then one stick of memory, try switching it with a different one. That could rule that out. Also try different slots. Make sure everything is seated correctly, and make sure you have both the 24 pin and 8 pin power connectors inserted in the mother board. Also make sure the video card has the 6 pin power connector connected. I would also test your monitor on another computer if possible. If it works, try it on the new build and see if you can select input, or source on the monitor. You may need to change that. |

Okay, here's the rundown: The cpu pins are all fine, i've tried 2 different sticks of ram in all of the dimm slots, and i have the main power, the 8 pin, and even the molex PCIE power plugged into the mobo, and the six pin power to the PCIE as well. All fans are spinning (it takes a few seconds for the fan on the gpu to engage, but i assume this is normal), the monitor works (i've been trying with two), and all lights and parts seem properly powered. When i turn it on, all that happens is all the lights and fans come on, but I don't hear a beep and the screen remains blank.
My only question: does anyone know if this particular mobo has an onboard speaker that emits the bios beep? because I can't seem to find one... and I don't know where to plug in the case speaker if it doesn't, i've just been assuming the mobo will emit the beep itself if it works. And everything is out of case, except the power supply which I left in the case, because there didn't seem to be any problem with the psu. |

I called xFx and they told me that since I have a Zerotherm BTF90 heatsink, the mounting bracket that goes on the back of the mobo could be shorting out some connections / soldering points on the back of the board. I'm not at home so I can't check on this... but has anyone heard of this happening?

Not sure, but I would definately try to use the stock heatsink first to see if it posts.
