BIOS update

Hi all.

I'm trying to do a BIOS update on my old PC. I load the AWDFlash utility, it runs, then it flashes 'Please wait' in bright yellow letters.

And they keep flashing, and keep flashing...

Just exactly how long should a Bios update take? And if it didn't finish, is it screwed?!

The Mobo is an Abit NF7-M, and I got the update from here following all the instructions to the letter.

Thanks!

The flashing of the bios itself should only take a couple of minuets at the most. If you happened to stop before it was finished then you may have bricked it.

I let it wait for ages, like 20 minutes. Then I restarted it and it was as it was before, without the update. I tried it again, and the same.

Is there a good reason you are trying to update?

Maybe the floppy isn't correct, try to make another.

Hi.

Yes - I downloaded another set of updates and it worked fine - thanks.

However I still have my problem - CMOS bad checksum. So I want to try removing (and reinstating) the CMOS battery - then maybe I'll try and get a replacement.

How do I get the battery out, is there a knack to it? I don't want to go poking in the mobo in case I damage something...

I usually take a small flat-blade screwdriver and gently pry it out. There usually is a tab that hold it in so you have to pull that back while lifting it out. It can be tricky. Don't be overly forceful and you should be fine.
