Cannot install ATI drivers

I have been trying to install current ati drivers and cannot get them to install, i have tried the 7.8, 7.10, 7.11 & 7.12 drivers with and without the atic ccc and they all fail to install correctly.

I get as far as part way thourhg the install and the screen goes blank and then the drive runs down with nothing else. I leave it for upt o a half hour and nothing. I restart and it will not go into windows, poosts fine but after the post and windows boot option screen it stops with blank screen and I hear drive run down.

I have installed nvidia 8400 gs and it runs fiine for games and some benchmark tests like futremark 3d mark 06.

I have new asus mobo so am not sure if this is problem like not all drivers installed that ati needs for theri drivers to work.

Using Windows Vista so netframe work is installed already.
all updates for windows are in except hd 2600 xt that I am trying toinstall.

I have two ati hd 2600 xt cards so it is not either one as they both do the same thing, blank screen and drive runs down like the program stopped.

asus m2r32-mvp
amd athlon 64 x2 6000+
ultra x3 800w psu
wd 200 gb hdd
4gb ram

The 8400 gs nvidia does work fine so I am sure it is ati drivers and some conflict. Some help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help but there are no real answers for me there.

I can get back into system and remove the drivers and such but I can't get them installed again.

Thanks. Still need some help though...

Go over to the AIT site and open a support ticket, they'll want you to register but that's fairly painless.
Since it's the weekend before Christmas they'll be slow in responding but they do respond.

I'm wondering about the cards.
Is one of them a "Master" card ?

No, I'm not using them at the same time, what I am saying is that the Nvidia card works fine and when I try either of the ATI HD 2600 XT cards the system will not load drivers correctly. It does not seem to be the graphics cards but the drivers and something on the system, probably software.

I have read that you can do that but when I point the browse feature to the cat and display drivers the installer doesn't see them for drivers. Is there some way to poiint the browse at hem to install or do you know where I can find a step by step for doing that.

Thanks.

Here's the Microsoft video on how to get Vista to do it automatically : http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/win...ac3541033.mspx

edit : Have you tried disabling the UAC ?
