In The Meantime

It will be a little while spent gathering up the parts for the next build. Do you have a suggestion for a video card that will work with my current motherboard? It is an:

ASUS K8S-MX 754 SiS 760 GX Micro ATX AMD

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!

Do you have a budget?

You only have PCI-E 1x and AGP which will limit your choices a little.

What kind of computer is this? Home built or name brand store bought?

What are the complete specs of this computer?

What do you do with the computer? Do you need a gaming video card? Or for some other activity that your current setup can't handle?

Hey Les, Another Iowan, cool!

My budget right now is as inexpensive as possible. The game my son really wants to play is The History Channel Civil War A Nation Divided game. My computer keeps freezing up. The requirements to play it are below.

Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP Pentium III, 1 GHz processor 256 MB RAM 800 MB hard-drive space CD-ROM drive Keyboard Mouse DirectX 9 DirectX-compatible 64 MB video card

My computer hangs graphically. We can hear audio fine. However when it hangs, I have to restart the computer.

Are you using the on-board video right now?

How about something like this?

There are a few good options right now for buying a good AGP card. Both of these cards however require more than 300W power supply, so you should upgrade your power supply as well. Here are two cards I found which are great for gaming, as well I've included a link for a power supply, the minimum should be at least 400 watts.

>$100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130083
>$200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130083

There aren't too many choices for power supply for micro atx towers, but this one has good reviews and has enough power for putting in a new card.
You should also look into upgrading the ram, 256MB is very little for most games and applications at the moment, you should go for at least 512 MB but preferably 1GB.

If you want to upgrade to 512 MB Ram, get another 256MB PC-2700 ram stick like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141302

If you want to upgrade to 1GB Ram, take out your current 256MB Stick and buy 2, 512MB PC-3200 ram sticks like these ones: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211013

Upgrading to 2GB is an option, but not really worth it unless switching over to vista.

Thank You Cricket and Masaki!

You have both been extremely helpful. To answer your question, Cricket, yes I am using the onboard video.

Masaki, I think it's a good idea to up my power supply and will do so.
