With everything here, it's hovering right around there. I'm not afraid to spend a little bit more to get more out of it, and also if I'm going overkill somewhere please let me know. I already have monitor, mouse, keyboard, and os. I have a concern with the mobo though. On these forums everyone seems to recommend this one, but the newegg reviews don't give it such a great review. Why is everyone giving it a bad review there but suggest it here? Also I will be dual booting into linux (Ubuntu 7.10). Will the wifi work under linux? Is there anyway to know for sure what chipset it uses? Thanks for all your help. edit: Added prices Last edited by CeeDub; 12-26-2007 at 11:52 AM. |

Looks like a very solid list, good research. We recommend Asus motherboards because they are the highest quality manufacturer out there. Other brands can be ok but Asus tends to have the best reputation. You'll find a lot of complainers on Newegg, its the ol' squeaky wheel syndrome. Lots of complaints show up but the happy people won't bother posting because they are too busy enjoying a new computer.
Newegg lists the LAN as "LAN Chipset Marvell 88E8056" I can't say for sure it will work with Linux but Ubuntu is really good about hardware compatibility.

What kind of operating system(s) will you be using? The LAN (Gigabit) is Chipset Marvell 88E8056, but the wireless card uses a Realtek RTL8187L chip.

I will be running Windows XP dual booting with Ubuntu 7.10.
http://linux-wless.passys.nl lists that chipset as having some support for linux (not explicitly, but I assume since all Realtek chipsets have some support that this one will too). Anyone out there had experience with these Asus wifi motherboards in linux? It looks like if I can get some confirmation that the wifi will work with Ubuntu, this is the mobo I'll get. Regarding the build you posted above, the parts are pretty good, but I would change the video card to a performance series like a X1950GT. This is a much faster card than a 8600gt, and costs less. Since you are using windows xp, there isn't much point in getting a directx 10 card which is slower than last-gen performance video cards. The X1950GT is $109.99 and comes with a $15 mail-in rebate at the moment, here is the newegg link for it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102034 If you are looking for a card with even better performance and directx 10, the HD3870 is a really good card for the price of $169.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103049 |

I didn't even consider going with ati. I'm not concerned at all for directx 10, so I will definitely be going that route. Thanks for advice.

Well, I might have changed my mind on the video card. I'm really indecisive on this one. Maybe someone out there can help me out. I don't care to have DirectX 10. I prefer nvidia, but that's not a deal breaker. I would like a fairly quiet card. I would like to spend around 100 - 130 on it. The reviews for the ATI card above mentions that the fan is pretty loud. Anyone have any suggestions.

Should change the ram to a CAS 5(CL5). The CAS 5 matches the ram voltage on the motherboard.

Try this X1950pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131056, it is faster than the x1950gt and has a quiet cooler. It's dual slot, so make sure you have an unoccupied pci slot underneath the pci-express slot. If you are not sure about the video card, type in the video card type and brand in google, this particular card has been reviewed often.

Sounds good to me. So unless anyone else has anything else to add, I think I'll go with the PowerColor. Thanks for all your help.
