Second build! Suggestions?
Hello I will be giving my first computer build to my mom, so I would like to build my second computer. I would like to save as much money as I can but my ideal budget is under $1000. Anyways, I'll be using this computer for the internet, word processing, pictures and photoshop, and music. Not much gaming though. I will probably use it also for work in the future(email and cad), but I will probably just upgrade when needed. So please let me know whether or not the list below is compatible and provide suggestions! Thanks

Thanks again. |

The only thing I would be careful of is that PSU. It has ATX 2.0 connections, but isn't powerful enough for even a basic video card like an X1300. I tried it when I built a home theater PC awhile back and ended up having to switch it out for a 450w FSP. It "should" work for an integrated card ok, but you might want to go ahead and get an FSP or Sparkle for a little bit more so you have the head room.

I see no reason why the 430 watt power supply won't work with the system, even when using a video card such as the x1300 series. The processor is energy efficient, as well as all the other parts. A system I built for my brother uses similar specs to the above but with a crappy 400 watt power supply from Apevia and a relatively high end video card (x1900gt). He's using a dual boot of vista and xp, and hasn't had a problem in over a year he's owned the computer.

It's not that it doesn't have enough power per say, it's that that particular model only has one 12v rail and there isn't enough thru put to go around for an ATX 2.0 system I think was the problem. I pulled that PSU out of my newer HTPC and put it into my older first build that was a Northwood P4 and it's been powering that just fine.

I haven't heard of new AMD chips having problems with not enough power for the 12v rail, but regardless, it's a good idea to get a better power supply now since you will be working with CAD later on and will most likely need workstation card like the FireGL, FireMV or Quadro Series. A 500W PSU from a good company from like Antec would be your best bet for future compatibility, here is a link for a 500W Antec PSU with dual 12V rails with 20 A on each rail it's currently selling for $59.99, so not a big price difference between this one and the one you picked out:

So 500 W would be good for future upgrade then if I get a video card? So I was just looking at other psu brands. Are any of these as good as the Antec one or would Antec be the best bet?

Antec would be your best bet, Thermaltake is a good power supply maker, but the power supply you picked out doesn't deliver enough power on each rail, FSP Group is not a very popular brand, so it's more risky than getting an Antec. At the same price, the Antec is your best choice because it's very reliable and provides enough power.

Actually FSP is a solid brand. It's listed as Fortron Source on the PCMech PSU list in the general forum.

Masaki, note that Antec in general use other manufacturers for the innards of their power supplies. The current Truepower Trio and I think MOST Earthwatts' units are made by Seasonic, with the Basiq line manufactuered by FSP (Fotron Source). Both of these are good brands, so I'm happy to recommend them. Their older Smartpower line, in contrast, were made by Channel Well, whose slightly inferior capacitors caused a higher-than average failure rate for a 'quality' brand.
There's a LOT of research that can be done with Power supplies, but for most, sticking with a quality brand is the best way to choose a good unit. To Jibby06 - that FSP would be a fine choice.
