New build
I'm almost at the stage now where i've got enough money to finally bin my current build and get a new one.
It's gunna be for gaming and looking to spend about £800. I do need keyboard and mouse (I can get hem myself) but not monitor just yet. I will be overclocking. Here's the parts I deffinately want: - Q6600 - Corsair DDR2 6400 - EVGA 8800GT KO - Lite On DVD-RW - Seagate 500GB 32MB Cache - Antec 900 Motherboard wise I can't make my mind up whether I want the X38 or P35. One half tells me I could get an amazing P35 board and the other says futureproofing and go with the X38? I'm gunna have to save up more if you tell me X38 cos then i'd be looking at the Maximus Formula. I don't want DDR3 yet. Power Supply.. I want modular. I've read all the threads I know good and bad brands but I really don't know what to pick. I want a reasonably high wattage for some headroom and so I can use it further on down the line? Are the OCZ PSU's worth it? I know they're on the list in blue but and I was thinking torwards the OCZ ModXStream 780W. Either that or the Antec Neopower 650W which is modular, or maybe even the Corsair 520W. I'm really after blue LED's in it which sounds kinda lame and I should but focusing on quality but I guess I could of missed something in this area. I'll probably buy this build when SP1 for Vista comes out which I hope is damned soon. Also is it true SP1 will allow 32bit ones to take 4GB of ram? I read that round here i'm sure. Which version though? At the minute i'm heading for Ultimate. I'll need a Heatsink too. www.overclockers.co.uk seems to have the best range in the UK so if you'd take a look i'd be grateful. I basically want whatever will cool my CPU the most. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...rtby=priceDesc I think that's all. Thanks. Edit: I need a new router too as now they'll be a second PC in my house and my current one only had 1 ethernet slot. Is this one good for the job? (I'm currently using a BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router) http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...jsp?LIN-BEFSR4

Good list so far. For the motherboard, I'd personally stick with a proven P35 setup but the Maximus board is very nice. Keep in mind that the P35 can handle Penryn CPUs so they will have some upgradeability in the future.
I'd choose a Corsair power supply first. Then the other two. I do not believe the rumor about the 4GB in 32bit has been confirmed. Anyone else who knows better can chime in. Do you plan on overclocking your CPU? If not, the stock cooler that Intel includes with the chip does a fine job on its own. That is a great router.

I do plan on overclocking.. upto 3.6GHz, I want to know which will keep it the coolest basically so I can do this. I guess motherboard will be decided at the time.
I'm currently on Pipex, effectively Tiscali, which isn't cable. So theres a phone line going in my current router. Will this be the same on the Linksys? I just don't want to be sending back and would like to be sure, i'm also guessing thats 4 ethernet slots in the back right? |

That Linksys is only a router. It will have an ethernet port labled Uplink that needs to be connected to a DSL modem. You can't simply plug the DSL phone line into the Linsys.

Do Linksys make a router which will take my DSL phone line? If not can I simply use my current router's ethernet out and put it in the uplink and this effectively giving me enough ethernet ports? I guess there's adapters out there too which could give me more but I like the sound of it not halving the speed etc.
Thanks. |
