So before I RMA my CPU.......

I'm building a new system with all new components. Here is everything:

Antec 900
OCZ Gamextreme 700w
Asus M2n32-SLI Deluxe
AMD 6400+
Zalman 9700 LED
XFX 8800GT
Soundblaster Xtreme Gamer
4gb Crucial Ballistix Pc800
WD 150gb Raptor
WD 500gb
Lite-on dvd-rw

I installed everything and tried to boot. My power supply comes on as does my hsf. after about 3 seconds lose power. Neither my case or mobo have a speaker, so i can't hear if i'm getting any post codes. I followed Hal's guide and still the same problem.

I have changed out ram and dimm slots. I've also reset cmos. I've re-installed the hsf to ensure it was properly mounted too. A bread board boot of just psu, cpu, hsf and 1 stick of ram results in the same problem. My mobo led is lit.

Please help. I'm at my wits end here. I feel like something is faulty at this point, but I don't have another setup to test hardware in. I'm left feeling like it's a bad cpu. any input would be great. thank you.

I would suspect the PSU first then the motherboard and then the video card. A CPU are pretty tough units, so that would be the last part I would suspect.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm ruling out th video card, because i can boot without it and i still lose power.

Even though my psu comes on and lights up, you think it could still be bad? When I've had psu's fail they don't get power at all. I was hoping my mobo was fine as the led is on. Keep the advice coming I appreciate it!

If I were in this situation, I'd want to get hold of a case speaker and listen for any beep codes. If you have a spare power supply, you should also swap that in to test. OCZ make good units, but anything can be DOA. Also, try all the sticks of RAM you have individually - a faulty one could cause a failed boot.

If you do get hold of a speaker, my suggestion would be to attempt a boot without the RAM and video card connected. Your board SHOULD beep at you in error, if it doesn't, I'd RMA the motherboard.

To answer your question on the PSU, yes, it can still power up and be "dead", if just one or two of the voltage rails are bad.

Like I said in my original post, I've gone through all of Hal's steps. I guess I need to try and find a setup to test my components in.

CPUs are surprisingly tough and reliable and I have yet to get one DOA or faulty after buildng a little over 100 computers to date (both AMD and INTEL)...I'd suspect either the power supply or the motherboard before I thought the CPU was the cause of the problem.

If you have got, or know anyone with, an old unused pc, you could take the speaker out of that and plug it in.

If this computer is in a case then maybe the motherboard is being grounded to the case.
