Building a gaming PC

I just put together a PC and would like some input. I have never built a PC before, so if you see anything that may not work well with another component, please tell me. If you think it's a solid build, let me know. Here it is:

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811129021
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131219
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130312

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820211066
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148140

Sorry for all the separate links. No matter how many times I try to share my wish list, it won't come up for other people to view.

Nice picks on the components. The P5K is also a good motherboard, in case you wanna browse a bit.

As for the RAM, go with Corsair. Really good brand, and still really cheap.

Welcome to PCMech, by the way!

Your missing a DVD drive (get a lite-on one) and what about an OS? What's your budget?

So far all parts will work but I'd recommend a few changes.

You don't really need a 700W PSU, OCZ is a good make but a Corsair 520W would probably be a much better choice.

For RAM we recommend Corsair over all the other brands.

Instead of getting that very highly priced E6850, why not get a Q6600:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017
You then double the amount of cores you have and its more futureproof, and thats what you're going with by the looks of things as you chose a mobo with the X38 chipset. Look at the P5K boards - i'd say they're just as good.

If you do only want 2 cores, dropping down to the E6750 would save you a fair bit and you wudn't really be sacrificing that much speed - you could overclock it to E6850 speeds easy.

With the money you save you could get a faster and bigger hard drive with a 32MB Cache:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288

Otherwise all good choices

Hope this helps.

Edit: Hitchface obviously types an awful lot faster than me when I started he hadn't posted - so you've got a few of the same answers twice.

After looking at your suggestions I changed some things up. I switched the Duo Core for the Quad Core, which is about the same price. I wasn't sure about the Quad Core though, because I had been hearing things about the Duo being better. Can you tell me the benefit of both, which one would be best for playing games and why?

Here is the Quad: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115017

I also got the motherboard you recommended. To be honest, my previous list was just breaking my budget. My limit is basically $1,250. Getting the new motherboard saves me $100, which will be able to allow me to get at CD drive. So, can this motherboard really compare to my previous one? Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131180

Everything else I kept the same. I don't see the reason at getting the 540W Power Supply because it costs the same as the one I already have. I don't know much about Power Supplies though, so I maybe just because the 700W one is higher in number doesn't make it better. Not really sure.

I also kept the same ram because the Corsair ram I saw was all a little more expensive, and I'm already too close to breaking my budget again and I still need to get a CD drive.

If you need to save money, drop down to the e6750.

I'm mostly just wondering why everyone chooses the P5K over the P5E. Why do you guys like the P5K? Does it offer everything the P5E does?

If I change anything to save money I will go with the new motherboard, but I want to know if I should stick with the more expensive one, or if I'll get the same performance using the P5K.

The P5K has been proven. It's been out for a while and they have had time to work on the bios for that board.

The P5E is relatively new. The only real difference I see is that it has a newer NB chip.

Not sure if it will overclock anybetter, or if it will offer any improvements in performance.

I have tried to post twice and it hasn't worked... Sorry if I suddenly have three posts spawn up, lol.

Anyways, can you link me to a P5K under $150. I'm trying to find one with SLI but I can't seem to find it, if you can't either it's OK. If I can save $100 and get the same quality I would like to do so.

I don't think any of them support sli, but here are some links to a few of them:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180

They are all under $150.

SLI won't really be worth it, mind you. For the performance benefits you get, you're actually spending a ridiculous amount of money. We'd recommend placing those funds into one really high end card instead.

You will want to switch both the hard drive and dvd burner to sata connections.

Also look into getting a retail version of the dvd burner. It comes with burning software for only like $3 more.

Don't forget an OS as well.

I already have an OS available, but how do I find a HDD and burner with sata connections, and why do I need those?

Can you link me to some available ones for about the same price?

SATA is the new standard. It is a fair amount faster than IDE, which is exactly why the swap occurred.

OK, I chose the new seagate HDD sata drive, and the $35 sata burner.

How about now then? Am I all set, because I'm getting overly excited and want to get my new PC asap

Looks good now.

I would actually get this ram instead thouhg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 It's rated faster and will be cheaper after rebate, but either one will work.
