I have built a new PC. Duel boot with windows vista and Linux Ubuntu. Everything went well with the initial build. Gradually the system deteriorated. The machine would boot fine for the first 20 or 30 restarts, now it won’t boot at all. If it didn’t boot, I would turn the power supply off and unplug the power cord, then it would start on re-boot sometimes; this worked for a while and now it won’t. I have replaced the power supply (Just PC – 450 Watt) with an Orion – 485 Watt. Now I get the HDD LED but not the Power LED. All the fans, including the video card, will run but the CD Drive gets no power. The hard drive is also running. The reset and power buttons won’t work. All of the components are brand new from Tiger Direct.
What am I going to do? I am thinking it may be the MB. What do you folks think? Specs: MSI K9AGM2 – MB 2 Gig OCZ PC2 6400 – memory AM2 duel core 3800+ - chip HIS 256 Meg video Thanks, Graham |

I have never heard of JustPC power supplies and the Orion is on the bad PSU list: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195. I would strongly suggest you invest in a known good power supply before you damage the motherboard, if you haven't already done so.
Do you have access to reputable make of power supply to swap in and test with?

No I don't have access to another power supply. I purchased the Orion at a local PC store. They said it was a good one. Graham |

The good and bad lists in that thread are not chiseled in stone, they are based on experience and good opinions.
Personally I would start with another power supply, but in the mean time you might want to consider an out of case build (instructions here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 ). This will rule out a possible bad power switch and an indirect ground fault between the motherboard and case frame. |

I'll try that probably later in the week.
Thanks Graham |

Its time to strip it down and follow the out of the case troubleshooting steps found here:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 EDIT: Sorry RJ, I didn't pay close enough attention to see that you already gave him this link.

No problem KT. The more the "out of case" instructions are promoted the better.
