Hey guys,
I just upgraded this computer so it can play cames and do some video editing. After all the usual headaches I got it running with the existing hard drive but now it is hard freezing at random times (power stays on, no blue screen, it simply stops responding). Seems to me like a video card problem, but I have no idea what to do. new parts: Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard Asus EN8500GT Silent/HTP/512M video AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2x1gb OCZ Platinum XTC ddr2 pc2-6400 existing: Thermaltake TR2-430W psu Western Digital WD800BB HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N Windows XP Home SP2 (still have to reactivate it) Any ideas what could be causing this? Should I just get a new SATA drive to install the OS on or is it more likely a hardware issue? I have to go back to school soon and I want to get this thing running smoothly before I do. Thanks..

Could be the video card, do the lock ups happen when you are using it for games or something else video intensive? Either way you should get a video card temperature monitoring program, you might be able to find a program from Asus, but there are many others that work. Fanless video cards usually have more overheating problems than video cards with fans.

No, it happens even when the computer is doing nothing.

It could be a software problem, make sure you have all your drivers updated and scan your computer for viruses and spyware. If you have your cpu usage at 100% due to a program it could also explain why the computer freezes. Either way, take a look at your video card temperatures and it should explain if the video card is the problem or not.

Cpu usage seems to be normal. I've got Asus smart doctor running for the video card but I can't figure out how to get into the settings or find any temp readings.
