Doesn't go to BIOS

The first time I booted up the computer after assembling, it brought me to the motherboard splash page (heard post beep and everything). It said hit delete to go to setup, or tab to see BIOS post message. Neither key did anything (ps/2 keyboard plugged in correctly, lights were on).

So I restarted to try again, figuring maybe it was a small window to hit the key.

This time it never made it to the motherboard splash page, but gave a black screen with some text at the top (didn't beep either):

Quote:
3 R600 GDDR3_16MX32 256BIT 512MB 507E/51
It seems to be describing my video card, but I have no idea why, or what isn't working. I've checked it a couple times and the card seems to be seated properly in the correct slot (verified in the mobo manual), and why did it boot to the mobo splash once but not since?

Specs:

MB - ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor

Memory - 2x A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory (4gb total)

Video Card - SAPPHIRE 100222L Radeon HD 2900PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported

PSU - COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-650-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 650W

HD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

DVD - LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA

Keyboard - Logitech Media Black PS/2 Wired

Thanks!

Some times it's a good idea to reset the BIOS via the mobo jumper after assembling everything.
If that doesn't work consider doing the "out of case build" instructions here:

Resetting the bios didn't work (only change was the mobo beeped this time), the out of case build had the same result as well, just that message displayed on the screen.

Reseat the video card. If that fails, try another video card to see if it is the motherboard.

Flash the BIOS - get the latest BIOS update from the mobo manufacturer and if you do not have a floppy drive, use WinFlash (if you can someone get to Windows). Dumb question, but you do have power supplied to the video card, right?

Um first of all check to see if you plugged the pci-e power connector to the video card... As it needs the extra power.

If that fails, take out the video card and try to boot up without it. The motherboard should beep telling you theres no video adapter if everything is working correctly. Try restarting your system a few times and see if it stills boots and gives you the beeps.

If you know the motherboard works now... try a different video card and see if that works.

The last option should be a bios upgrade unless i can find some information that shows the 2900 from ati needs a bios upgrade in that motherboard...

Yes, I had connected the extra power connector to the card.

I had another graphics card lying around which I know works (SAPPHIRE 100218L Radeon HD 2600XT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported) but it gave me identical symptoms, with a different message:

Quote:

I tried with no graphics card and the mobo gave me the appropriate warning beep.

How do I upgrade the BIOS without a working graphics card?

No BIOS update for that motherboard says it fixes this issue but it's worth a try. You will have to get another videocard, just a 6200 or something that should work. If that card doesn't work I would RMA the motherboard for another one.
