This is my first time building a new computer, i was curious if i can just take my older hard drive out and use it as the main hard drive for my new computer? Any advice?

Yes you can use it in your new computer assuming the HDD is supported by the mobo. I would need to know the type of HDD and mobo. I also explained in more detail in your other post about the XP issue.
