Are you planning on getting just the computer, or do you need an operating system, monitor and/or peripherals? Generally most Intel processors are faster then their AMD counterparts, except for processors under $100 (or around there), so for a computer for $1000, going with Intel would be preferabble, but if you plan on getting a computer for $1000 with OS, monitor and peripherals, AMD is a better choice.

Can't really help with AMD, so I'll leave the processor and mb to someone else.

Since little or no games, could go with an uATX motherboard and use onboard video.
Would look to the Asus uATX boards in the P5K series.
Go for an Intel Quad E6600 and with an uATX board could use 3gigs of ram(Corsair VS DDR2 667 or XMS DDR2 800.
HDs: Seagate 7200.10 or 11 in the size of your choice. 500gig would be a good starting size.
Lite-On DVD burner in a retail package(for the burning software).
An Antec case with PSU would be a quick way to the case/PSU choice question.
