New here and building a new computer-need help?
SORRY guess this should have gone here!
Hello, I am no computer guy and barely make it through. My old computer broke and needs a new power supply that I have purchased from newegg.com and am waiting for. I am currently on my wifes cheapo computer. I am going to build my new computer and may assist a friend with a lot more knowledge is who about 20 years younger and of a different generation who seems to understand this stuff better. I am a hotrod guy who uses the computer to attend forums and work on hot rods and make a few bucks on craigslist and my website at www.smithvalleymopars.com a local page run with frontpage. I asked a computer question here on this thread and had some suggestion on parts to buy. At the end of the thread another guy informed me of this site and I thought I would join and try and learn. Are the parts suggested here on this thread http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/...=0#Post4137919 parts you more knowledgable guys/gals would suggest or reccomend. I have outlined my computer use on the thread as well to give an idea of what I use and what I do on the computer. I am no gamer but want a nice computer that I wont have to update soon. Thanks for any help and I will be hanging out lurking, in an attempt to learn something as I am WAYYYYY over my head. LAWFISH Last edited by LAWFISH; 01-27-2008 at 10:36 PM. |

I've taken a look at the website, so I have a good idea of what you need to use the computer for, however the list made on the site has some bad parts like the rosewill power supply, and most of the other parts are either outdated, or there are better choices then them for the same price. For the dust problem, I would suggest buying some filters for the fans since that will capture the dust and prevent if from going in your case; you'll have to clean the filters off once in a while though. I'll get a list of recommended parts to use as reference, and explain it in a post underneath the list.

So I'll explain the parts on the list from the top to the bottom. Before that though, I haven't answered your question regarding the dust proof case; most cases either have vents or fans which will bring in dust, and even with filters, you will see a reduction of dust, but it will most likely still be a problem. If possible, try getting a mini-itx computer (very small computer) which has enough power for email, web browsing, frontpage, ect. but doesn't have any vents (depends on the computer but you can find them without vents or fans) because they use very little power. If you need an external hard drive, you'll have to ask someone else, but basically you're looking at getting an enclosure, and a hard drive to put in it.
Here is the explanation about the parts: The liteon DVD burner is good quality, fast, and has some good software that comes with it which will help when it comes to watching or burning dvds. The NZXT case has insulation which makes it very quiet, the fans are also large which makes them quieter than smaller fans since they don't have to spin as hard to push the same amount of air. One of the 120mm fans has blue LEDs on it, so if you think that will be a problem, get another 120mm from a company like arctic cooling. The hard drive is high capacity, so it should be fine for recording tv, and other uses, and it's been a brand that has worked well for me. Hauppauge is a good brand for TV tuners, this particular one has newer technology incorporated into it and comes with a remote. The video card I recommend is capable of using dual monitors, and is really good for video playback. Coolermaster is a much better power supply than the Rosewill, and 460W will be more than enough for the parts picked out, but it's good to make sure you have a bit of extra wattage on the power supplies since the actual amount of wattage that is output fluctuates a bit. The mushkin ram I recommend is fast and of high quality; generally 2GB is enough, and when using XP, even 1GB works fine. The 80mm fan filter is for the power supply, while the 2 120mm fan filters are for the case fans. It should work best if you take out the case fans and put the filters in between the case and the fans. For the power supply, you should be able to place the filter over the power supply once the power supply is in place, and you are about to screw it into position. Asus is a really good motherboard manufacturer, and the P5K is a really popular motherboard for the Intel platform, so you shouldn't have any problems with it. Lastly the processor; this is one of the newer/faster processors released by Intel, and is a lot faster than other processors for that price range. |

Case is really a personal choice, the one you ordered, as long as it is an ATX case, should work fine. You will need to determine what filters you need based on what fans it has though. For dust problems I have found it you can get it off the floor and have a can of compressed air standing by it is just a minor matenance problem. My own computer is in a very dusty room but I just blow it out more often and never let it build up, does not take long.
You can use the same burners, not reason to buy differnt types at the price they sell for today. You might get the second one OEM since you dont need the 2 copies of the software that comes with the retail one. SATA is new technology. Older burners used IDE which are still available. For a new build you want to go with SATA because newer MB are designed for it. SATA has quite a few advantages. It uses a thinner round cable so you get better air flow in your case. It also automaticly sets your burners and hd so you do not need to set jumpers to slave and master. Also, most newer mobo no longer have native support for IDE, so you would be using a thrid party controler. Just buy SATA for opticals and hd for newer builds. Kat

The new computer is going in the home and dust wont be an issue. I know its odd, but I ordered the case because its red. I have a drag race team and everything is red, the trailer, dodge diesel dually, everything except the drag car, which is a black and white drag cuda. Red was not even my favorite color but ended up that way. so if I can use the case great, if not I will buy this one indicated. I was in a hurry to get the new power suppply for my computer and picked up the case at the same time. thanks Dave |

I only had one fan in my last computer and it worked fine with no over heating. Generally, newer PSUs run much cooler than the older Pentiums and over heating is no longer a major problem unless you are building in a very small care or doing something like Over-clockinig. I dont think you will have any problems, the case has vents in front and on the side so you should have decent air-flow. You can also add a fan if you have issues but doubt that will be necessary. That case is very RED............
