Overheat/power issue. HELP!

I just put together my new pc last night. Parts include:

Intel D955XBK motherboard; Intel Pentium D935 CPU; 2GB of Kingston RAM; Zumax 500W Power Supply, ATi Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro Graphics Card; DVD Player/Writer; and WD 500GB Hard drive

I put everything together last night and used my boot cd for windows xp pro to do an os install. Everything was fine (power up, bios accessing, reading peripherals, formatting hardrive) until it began to load the xp setup. During the “install devices” stage the computer shutdown. The CPU was very hot, so I let it cool down and tried again, but now the computer won’t do anything. The fans spin for a second and the lights come on for a second and then it stops. It is like my CPU is fried or the PSU is dead now. I just don’t know what to do. I am new to this byopc thing so any light you could shed on the situation would be very very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Which CPU heatsink are you using? The stock Intel heatsink or a third party cooler?

Do you have the heatsink on completely?

Have you rechecked all the connections?

Do you have a spare power supply to try?

yep everything is connected correctly and unfortunately, I don't have another psu to try. Does the intel heatsink not work very well? Is 500 W enough for my system?

The LGA775 heatsink isn't that easy to install and many have installed it incorrectly the first time. Here's a good illustrated tutorial.

Unless you have taken the heatsink off or removed the thermal compound that came with it then you don't need to reapply anything. Just leave that one.

I took the heatsink off last night and tried to reseat it thinking that might help, but it didn't thats why I asked about reapplying the compound. Also thanks Cricket for the instructions, I will try them when I get home from work and report back. Do you think it could be the psu or are you guys leaning towards a hsf/cpu problem?

Have you seen something like this before?

sorry for so many questions

I would lean towards PSU, I have never heard of that brand. Get a known brand like Corsair, Seasonic, FSP ect. The PSU is the most important component in a PC, never go cheap on it.

I would get a well known PSU, an Xclio Goodpower 500w should work great for you.

Well, I got it running again. I disconnected and reconnected the cables and it powered up. But once again during the install devices section of windows xp, it shutdown. I restarted it and let it sit in the bios to monitor the CPU temp and see if it shut off just sitting there. It has been 20 minutes and all is good (CPU fan speed is 2200 and temp is 53 C). All voltage readings are good so it's getting power. What could this be?

Could try to run memtest, and also try to test the hard drive to see if it's faulty.

also, when it shut off the very first time there was a burning smell coming from the PSU, CPU area, but that didn't happen yesterday. Do you think the CPU isn't transfering heat well when under load?

Ok, if you had a burning smell, I would definately try changing the power supply. check the motherboard to see if anything looks or smells burnt.

You can get memtest at www.memtest.org and find the hard drive test at http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp

there is a spot on the motherboard right next to the CPU, but this was there yesterday and it didn't affect it when it was chilling so is that a problem. The only other PSU I have is a 235W old school 20 pin which isn't enough for this system I don't think.

That is what happens when you get a crap power supply. You need to try a new PSU of one of the brands I suggested. It may have high ripple or one of the rails may have gone high causing the smell and spot. Unfortunately the damage may have already been done to the motherboard, only way to tell is get a new PSU though.

If there is a burn spot on the board it is probably fried.
