recovery console - cannot get access to copy files - why?

I made an image of the hard drive of my old Windows server 2000 machine to an external drive using Acronis 11. I cloned the external drive to a new hard drive in a new PC. It completes POST and then begins boot of windows 2000 but stops with error message "ntoskrl.exe missing or corrupt"

I windows 2000 CD to boot from CD and into Recovery Console. I am trying to copy a new ntoskrl.exe file into windows/386 directory but I keep being told "access denied". I have the administrator password but I am never given an opportunity to enter it??

Any help appreciated...
