Are you building just the computer, or do you need monitor and peripherals as well? Also do you need an operating system disc?

Building a PC will usually cost you less than buying it from a manufacturer and will usually give you better performance.

If you need a monitor and everything with that price, it will be tough...you can always check my ad in the trading post Lol sorry if I shouldn't have advertised that.

Perhaps, but there's just so many deals out there where you can get an entire system with monitor and printer included that's hard to match going the build route.

Once you get over the entry level system I have never had any problem matching and beating the cost of a pre-built. Sure, you can find pre-builts with very nice specs but using older or cheaper components dirt cheep, but if they are using the same quality parts you have chosen to build with it is not hard to beat their price. From my experience, most pre-builds cut a few corners when choosing parts just so they can have an attractive price.

Back to the original question. If you are just building the box your budget is not bad, but if you are trying to get a complete system for $900 it will be a very tight build. You will ahve to cut quite a few corners yourself to keep under that budget.
