Creating BOOT DISK
Hello
I am thinking of putting a PC togther myself, One issue I find difficult, BIOS Updating, which I may run into. Now it always mentions creating a floppy boot disk. I am unlikely to have a floppy drive unless I buy one just for this requirement or I can use a USB flash drive stick, the mobo will boot fro this this, but it seems to make it bootable is complicated. Can someone tell me first what needs to be done to make a floppy boot disk, step by step, please. If you feel like also mentioning about USB that would be great. So far my reseach has told me about creating floppy boot disk for the purpose of BIOS flashing 1. insert floppy into floppy drive 2. under my computer select it and format floppy 3. Download utility *.BIN which will contain serveral files from mobo manu. 4. Download new BIOS file 5. self extract to floppy, copy all files onto floppy. You now have a floppy ready with new BIOS On another floppy, copy exsisting BIOS onto it. Change boot order if required so boots from floppy first Will it boot from floppy now or is there some basic files that need to be on floppy as well. krishan |

I know about this site but find the whole site confusing at best, does not ever give anywhere a step by step guide

I was able to flash my bios using a usb flash drive.
It will probably depend on the mother board. You can usually get instructions how to do that from the mother board manufacturer's website.

just for the hell of it I took an old wind ows 98 PC and within windows there is a option to create a boot disk, which I did and when I restarted it loaded to some funny looking file and I had to press alt+F+X to exit to a:\, where it stayed there, now is that all normal, so a boot disk just lets you start up the PC, and if this was a BIOS update sure it can be done now, but does XP have such an option to create a floppy boot disk?

Yes, you can make a "system disk" with XP.
