fried CPU?

today, my friend built his CPU (I was there with him).
he turned it on for his first time and a bit of smoke came out, we checked the CPU and it seems theres a bit of grey-ish piece of thing there (probably melted?)
what are the chances that the CPU got fried and is there a way to fix this?
when we flipped it, it looks perfectly fine, except for just the grey stuff on the back.

How about complete system specs? Including name of brand and model of each part, including the psu.. Where did the smoke actually come from? CPU is the processor not the whole tower itself.. If there is grey stuff on the under side of the processor then you most likely toasted it.. They only way to fix it would be to replace it with a new one..

for future reference do this http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=168456 before you assemble it in the case..

Was the fan on the heatsink spinning when you first turned it on? Did it start right up or shut down right after power up? That is thermal compound which acts a a insulator between the processor and the heat/sink no worries there. You need to know exactly where the smell came from, it could have come from the psu itself, even though that psu is considered top notch.

Was the motherboard sitting on stand offs which are in the case, to keep the system from shorting out..

If the Grey stuff is sticky then it's likely the thermal compound which is normal. Does the motherboard look clean, no burn marks?

i think it went on for like one second then it shut right off and a bit of smoke came out. also, there was no thermal compound added because it didnt come with it in the processor. there are no marks on the mobo, looks clean.

Do that.

EDIT: Do you know exactly where the smoke was from? Try and figure that out first.

okay he did that and there was nothing, the vid card and psu fan spun for a second or two and then nothing happened. the heatsink didnt move and no smoke this time....does this mean its fried?
is there a chance that the mobo is gone too?

Does the video card have the power cable plugged in?

Are both the 24 pin and 4 pin power cables plugged into the mother board?

You're right. I thought that one was a 4 pin, but it's 8 pin instead.

If everything is plugged in, and out the case and still won't turn on, then it's time to substitute parts.

Do you have any spare parts, or another computer to check the video card or memory in?

okay forget what i all said, i just want to find out if its the processor or the mobo. so i have some questions to find out:
1) will a bad/burnt processor do any damage to cause the mobo to fail?
2) will a bad mobo cause a processor to be bad/burnt?
3) will a bad mobo cause any problems to the other components such as the video card?
4) will a bad processor cause any problems to the other components such as the video card?
5) will the fans (case, heatsink, power) move even if the processor is bad?
6) what are some problems that cause the fans to not move? is it the mobo?
7) can the heatsink still be re-used if the processor was burnt?
8) think i can replace these parts with the warranty? lol

What are some problems that can be caused when the MoBo touches metal?

Did you put thermal grease on the cpu, or did the heatsink come with a thermal pad? Did you plug in the CPU fan? Are there any burn marks on anything. It is kind of hard to burn up a CPU, and if you did the one who built the computer is at fault.
