Using old hard drive

i just recently built a new pc and wanted to use my old hard drive out of an HP comp, but when i go to re install windows it wont let me. i know that on the hard drive hp had an emergency re install that was on the hard drive and you didnt need a windows disk. im thinking this is interfearing with the new install, so i was wondering how i could get around this.

Welcome to PCMech. Are you using an XP disc for this new install? What exactly is the computer telling you as you attempt to install?

this should not interfere as you should be able to completely format the disk and delete partitions (causing you to lose that partition so be careful if that's not what you want) when booting from a windows xp cd and choosing to install.

i'll second kov-ice's question. what message are you getting?

If you are trying to install the XP that came with the IBM that could also be your problem. Most store bought computers are shipped with a copy of XP that is tied to the MB in the computer. It wont let you do a new install on a different MB.

OK. Let's start from the beginning.

Please list all specs for the system you're trying to build. Also, is your hard copy of XP a store-bought upgrade disc, a disc that came with a previous system, or something else?

this old system im using is a bout 2 years ago so im not sure all the specs, but this is what i do know. im using a Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor 640+, 3.2 GHz, 800 FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache Supporting Hyper-Threading Technology. my mother board is a gigabye GA-8I915P Duo. hdd is a western digital 320g 7200 rpm sata. the memory is pny ddr 2x 1024 mmb not sure the speed though. the windows copy is store bought and im pretty sure its not an upgrade version, but a new install. when i disable the raid function in the bios nothing happens, it wont boot from cd it just stalls. i tried flashing the bios back to factory, but the raid function is still there. i must admit i thought i would be able to swap hard drives put a new one in the other re-install windows and i would be good.
