New build, any suggestions on my setup
I am looking to do a new build for moderate gaming (WOW, COD4, SIMS 2, and maybe Crysis if it will run it
). Attached are the specs on the computer I want to build, please go over them and make any suggestions. And yes I am going with AMD as i have always had great success with them. My budget is $1400 so I can't afford a whole lot more, but don't think I'll need much more. The few areas I am consirned about are the video card, motherboard, PSU, and RAM.

For current gaming I understand that Windows XP is still better/more stable thatn Vista. Also, I don't know about MSI video cards, most people here recommend eVGA cards.
Otherwise it looks good (and I still like AMD too. ).

How long does Microsoft plan on supporting XP. I would like to go with XP but I plan on having this PC for a 4-5 years, and I don't want to buy XP if they plan on dropping it in 1-2 years. If I could be assured XP will be around in 4-5 years I would immediately go with XP.

Looks like a solid list to me. I just see a couple of things to tweak.
The Seagate ES line is designed for servers. Check out the 7200.10/11 series instead. Double check that your LiteOn comes with Nero software. The Retail version will. Finally, we recommend Linksys networking products over Netgear. Check out the WRT54GL router. Tough to call on XP's support life, but Microsoft just recently stopped supporting Win98, so I'm sure it will be at least a few years before support ends. XP is on track to be pulled from retail shelves in the summer though.

I went with the NETGEAR router because it supports up to 108MBS, and it has the rangemax booster. The layout of my house and the location where it will be put for my two desktops and one laptop computer could be 50-60 feet through 5-6 walls. To get an equivelant Linksys it would cost me $40+ more.
Found this website on the cutoff day for XP. Anyone know if this is true? anccording to this home versions of XP will lose support in April 2009. http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=133 Last edited by NIeyona; 02-13-2008 at 07:03 PM. |

You can still buy Windows 95, so I'd stick with XP until they work all the bugs out of Vista. XP is still a rock solid operating system.
