Cheapest build that can handle an OC'd Core 2 Duo
I'm trying to figure out the cheapest build possible that will allow me to run an overclocked E6750. I'm going to take my current e6750 out of my main computer and replace it with a q6600, and oc that.
I want to get the e6750 oc'd to around 3.6, where I have it now, but no less then 3.4. This is what I have picked out: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147095 MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131197 HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148231 PSU: not sure which one would suit me the best since i want to oc. 1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104901 2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371013 3) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104951 Heat sink for e6750: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118003 Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824254018 Keyboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823107119 Mouse: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104051 That comes out to about $370 plus shipping costs. Anywhere I can save a few bucks? Trying to do this as cheap as possible. I already have extra ram that I'll use. It's Corsair xms 2x1gb ddr2-800 cas 5. I will also just put in a dvd drive to load the os, then take it back out. And I plan on running linux. This will be a purely folding machine. That is it's main purpose. It will substitute as a backup machine if something happens to my main one, and will be used to run diagnostics and repair my main one if needed. And the q6600 oem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018 As a side note, I plan on getting the new q9450 when it comes out later on this year. I will then use that one in my current computer, and transfer the q6600 to this folding machine, unless I build another cheap one to fold some more.

Any opinions?
Really not sure which power supply would be good enough. Also, don't know if that mb would allow me to do a mild overclock on the processor. Does anyone have experience with that mb and it's bios? Thanks. |

I can't comment on the overclocking ability of the P5KPL-VM, but I would go a bit higher on the power supply for an overclocked machine. An FSP 400w would be perfect. The rest of your list looks good.
If you really want to shave the cost, how about buying a KVM switch and dropping the extra keyboard, mouse and monitor? Just a thought.

I initially wasn't going to use a monitor, but my dad wants one for when he sets up something else, and since I'm using his electricity, I kind of have to, plus it's a nice gift to him.
This computer is going down in the basement anyway, so a kvm switch wouldn't work out for me. Just easier to get cheap keyboard and mouse to leave down there. How's this psu look: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952 |

Ok. Purchased everything just now. Got the 400W FSP, and changed the mb to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131187
Hopefully that will allow me to oc better. |

Nice job in parts selection shadow, but my question is what the heck is a folding machine?

You'd know if you had Alzheimer's, your wife will get over and say you have some other disease anyways, its just an endless cycle.

Waiting for the parts is making me second guess my choices.
Getting nervous that the power supply isn't going to be enough. And even more nervous that the heatsink won't be that effective. |

Well, my build is up and running.
Only problems are the temps, and some think my power supply might not be cutting it. Spent a few more bucks and got some new case fans, going to do a case mod, and also got a new power supply. Got the corsair 550. It should be here in a few days. Once I get that all set up, then I can finish my overclock. currently at 3.2ghz. But I'm starting to fold while I wait.

Got to 3.4 like I wanted, but just ddin't feel good about the temps. So I have it down to 3.3 and it's stable. Over 14 hours on prime. Temps look good there to. That extra 10 fsb just wasn't worth the difference in temps or voltage.
