I like the intel build.

You can save money by not getting vista ultimate. Home premium should have all you would need.

Also, the power supply with that case isn't that good. You will need a seperate one.

Look at a lite-on dvd burner. Sata, retail.

Thumbs up

I was leaning towards the Intel build myself... especially because of the quad core processor.

So you think I should go with Home Premium 64? ($109)
Ultimate is kind of overkill... I'm not building a true home office with this unit.

And as for the PSU: Rosewill RP550-2 ATX12V v2.01 550W Power Supply 115/230 V CSA,UL,TUV, FCC ($62)

New grand total for the Intel build: $1073 if I did my quick math right.

All those components should be compatible, right?
Like I said this is my first "bottom up" build... I dont wanna spend a grand on a brick haha

64-bit is slower than 32-bit in most applications and games because it has to translate the 32-bit code (there are hardly any games or applications that run on 64-bit natively) into 64-bit taking up some additional computer resources. 32-bit isn't going to be obsolete any time soon, and it's quite stable (and has better compatibility). Regarding your build list, if you're a gamer, you'll want to get at least a HD3850 instead of the 8600GT. If you'd like to go Nvidia instead, a 8800GS will provide a lot more performance than the 8600GT, and is about the same price and performance as the HD3850. Since you're going for a large monitor, it might be a good idea to get a 22 inch since it's close in price, and you're probably not going to upgrade your monitor anytime soon once you buy it.

For a power supply, look at this thread to see what brands are good: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Looks compatable, but your PSU choice is bad. Unfortunately I dont think I could come up with an alternative for your budget. You can not get a quality 500 w PSU with case, keybard, and mouse for $53. The problem we are warning you about is not that a cheap PSU may fail, that is a given, but that when a cheap PSU fails it can take out much more than itself. Cheap PSUs do not have safty features built in like more expensive units that protect the rest of your componets. I would really suggest you look at the list shadow posted and try to find something from a quality manufature, but it will probably push your budget another $30-40.

You should look to get a case without a PSU and add a good PSU.
The one that is shown with that combo deal is an older ATX format. It doesn't even have enough amps on the 12v rail to power your build, get a good ATX 2.0.
