Front USB Shorts Out
I built a new computer this december. I've started having problems with the USB ports on the front of the computer. When I try to plug in a camera, MP3 player, or my PSP I hear what sounds like a static discharge.
All the USBs stop working at that point. I can restart the computer, but I have to kill the main power switch on the power supply in order for the USBs to start up again. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Last edited by yoda; 02-23-2008 at 02:20 PM. Reason: Misspelled out in Title. |

you are probably causing a static discharge to the computer due to low humidity and/or the computer or yourself are on carpeting. The best way to eliminate this is to touch a metal part of the case before plugging in an USB device. This is a problem every winter when the humidity is low. I've seen a static discharge while plugging in a thumb drive blow a motherboard.

Thanks for the tip. The computer is on carpet and the humidity is really low.
