Windows XP Setup: HDD not detected

I've got a "new" build (an old build with a new HDD and graphics card) and I'm having difficulty getting XP to install. I set up the hardware the same as I had it before, which use to work fine. However, I was getting 0x7B STOP errors when I tried to install Windows, until I read this:
Quote:
I had the same issue for the past two weeks and finally resolved it last night. I tried everything from the SATA II drives to memory incompatibilities and eventually it came down to my CD / DVD drives and the way that ASUS motherboards deal with onboard IDE's.

On my Asus P5WD2, which is very similar to yours, I have three onboard IDE's. Two of them are grouped together and one is sort of on its own on the side of the motherboard. Make sure that the optical drives (CD and DVD) are plugged into the side IDE and not the two that are grouped together.

Secondly make sure that you use the IDE cable with the blue, black and grey connector and not any of the other cables. Also remember to set the one drive as master and the other as slave and plug the grey connector into the master and the black connector into the slave and the blue one into the motherboard.

The problem comes from the fact that Windows or Linux (I've tried both) is seeing the optical drives as hard drives and therefore is not able to start up properly.
I swapped the ribbon cables/IDE sockets of the HDD and DVD drive as directed, and now I get to the Windows set-up screen (the STOP error issue is solved). However, if I try to continue, Windows gives me an error screen saying that no HDD is found! The BIOS detects the HDD from what I can tell, but Windows does not. I'm not sure what to try next. Any suggestions from you smart folks?

System:
Mobo: ASUS P5LD2 (old)
CPU: Intel P4 3.0ghz (old)
HDD: Western Digital WD1600AAJB (new)
DVD: NEC DVD_RW ND-354 (old)
RAM: 2 GB Corsair something or other (old, don't remember the specs)
GPU: ASUS Geforce 7300GTS (new)

That is not correct.

Do not use master/slave jumpering, use cable select (CS). The black connector at the end is for the master, the gray connector in the middle is for the slave.

Put both drives on the Intel ICH controller, do not use the ITE controllers. Put the HD on the end, DVD in the middle, both jumpered CS. Set the ICH to "enhanced" in the bios, not RAID. Disable the ITE.

That seems to have worked, thanks!

One concern: when I boot, the BIOS tells me that no master IDE hard drive was detected. I continued anyway and the drive is partitioning. Is this normal? If I set the HDD to master, what will happen?
