Simple machine

I'm looking to build a basic computer to run a simple picture slide show on a big HD TV. That's all it needs to do. Should I even use windows, or should I consider an alternative OS? Should I get a video card for this? How much memory and processing power do I need? I'm looking to see how cheaply I can get high-quality images out of a machine like this. Any recommendations?

For just a slide show, I think you'd be ok with on-board video, and you could use a version of linux as your operating system.

You could also get by with 1gb of ram, maybe less, and an older processor too.

I found an old store-bought computer that I can wipe and install Linux on, but I'm going to need to get a video card with HDMI output. Do you think it will be a headache finding Linux drivers for this kind of video card?

Which distribution of Linux would you guys recommend?

I found Linux Mint was a great version for me to get my feet wet. It seemed the easiest to learn on.

Ubunu is very easy to use as well. Their support forum is very helpful.

How much are you looking to spend? I can give you a list of new components to get for really low prices that would meet and exceed your needs.
