greedo SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (Troubleshooting.)

Well, I think I have the problem isolated, but I'm still an amateur so I wanted to make sure before I took action.

Put together a new system based on the advice I got in this thread. Link to the system I ended up going with is here.

I put it all together in my case and tried to boot. You guessed it, SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE oh my god shut it off shut it off.

So took it all apart and put my old rig all back together (yep, I only have one case) and came here. Then I saw HAL's excellent starter troubleshooting guide and followed the instructions. Still got the SQUEE when I was just down to the mobo, power source, and vid card. With the pieces loose I was able to string them out, and it sounded like it was coming from the vid card. Sure enough, I took the vid card off and tried again, and sure enough the sound stopped. (Though I wasn't able to tell if it was capable of "posting" or whatever though since no output was hooked up.)

I read a few user reviews of the card and I see a few people saying the card was DOA. I am guessing the same thing has happened to me but want to make sure before I send anything back. I'm wondering if there was some other way I should have plugged the card into something else, though I couldn't find any power sockets or anything on it - I just plugged it straight into the mobo and that was it.

I guess that's the whole story. Thanks in advance for your advice. Z

If the sound goes away after you removed the video card, then I would suggest you rma it..

Turns out there WAS a power input on the card. Who would have suspected that there'd be an end-on socket? I found it when I was collecting the original box contents to send it back and asked myself, "Why the hell would they enclose these power adapters even though the card doesn't use them?"

Went back and tried HAL's guide again and the little dickens booted up fine. Off to try packing it all back into the case again. Thanks dd5 and the board at large.
