I could use some help making sure everything on the list is compatible and/or not a piece of crap. This is my first build and I would like to make it last.
These are the parts I'm looking: I'll be using it mostly for gaming.(Call of Duty, Crysis, etc...) Motherboard:$129.99 XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard or $179.99 Asus P5N-D Motherboard - NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI Processor:$254.99 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz Power Supply:$99.99 Corsair VX550W 550W ATX Power Supply Memory:$119.99 Patriot Extreme 4096MB Dual Channel PC6400 DDR2 Hard Drive:$119.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Video Card:$249.99 XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX Video Card Optical Drive:$29.99 LITE-ON DH-20A4H-08 E-IDE Burner with Lightscribe Technology Case:$75.99 Sunbeam Transformer Back Steel ATX Full Tower Total: under $1200 <-- I wouldn't mind spending a couple hundred more. I've been parts shopping for weeks and now it's time to buy. I'll be running XP to start with, but will upgraid to Vista eventually. Also I'd appreciate any advice on a good widescreen monitor 19" or bigger Thanks for your time Last edited by EvilJesus; 03-11-2008 at 02:50 AM. |

I would advise against the SLi motherboards, it is only worth the cost of 2 GPU's if you use the GTX or the Ultra. Intel CPU's tend to work better with Intel chipsets. Look at the P5K with the P35 chipset: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180
Other than that your list looks good.

We usually recommend you don't buy from Tigerdirect cause of coostomer service issues. Stick to newegg.
Change that dvd burner to a sata connection, retail. Check out this card, will save you a few dollars: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc..._-NA-_-NA-_-NA and subtract another $15 for promo code "MSIVGA15"

List updates
Thanks for the quick replies. Here is the DVD burner.
Optical Drive: Lite-On LH-20A1S SuperAllwrite SATA OEM DVD Burner What about this monitor: Hanns·G HG-216DPB Black 21.6" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor The reviews were ok. AS far as mother board is concerned I would like something SLI ready for in the future, or could I just change mother boards when it comes time? |

SLI is really a poor upgrade path. If you really want the best video card performance out there, wait for the 9800 to come out. Also, Acer makes some good budget monitors. Here is a nice one for around $180

There is no point of adding a second card in a year or so. Say in one year you go to add another 8800GT, by that time the GeForce 10 will be out and a mid end card from the 10 series will seriously outperfrom the two 8800GT's in SLi. Therefore SLi is only worth it if you want the best available now and you get dual GTX/Ultras.

List looks good. If you need burning software you can pick up the retail version of the lite-on for about $3 more and get a free copy of Nero.
Some people say the P5K-E has a better audio, persoanlly I use headphones and went with the basic P5K and am very happy but I will throw that out there for consideration. If you get the SLI bug again and change back, your PSU is not large enough. Two 8800 GTs in SLI use about 650-700 w I think. With your current build the 550 is a great choice. I prefer Corsair, Crucial, or Mushkin memory, but have never tried Patriot so I will leave that to others to comment on. Kat
