First build since 5 years ago, need some opinion

The last time i build a pc, it was 5 years ago. now want to build another one. i m looking for some advice since i m not up to date with all these new components. i just want a decent system, nothing fancy, no OC , and i m not a gamer. these new components are giving me a headache. i dont know which one is right. my budget is around $1000.
Besides the 24 inch samsung lcd, a sata western digital 80gig for Vista, 2 more sata hard drive for storage and 1 or maybe 2 dvd burner. (i might opt for 8gig of ram later on). These are the major components.

Looks good, but can be a bit better.

I haven't heard bad about abit mother boards, but we usually recommend Asus P5K series cause of reliability. Look at the P5K-E or P5K.

That power supply is overkill. You could do well with a Corsair 550 and still have headroom.

You could probably downgrade the video card to since you don't play video games.

Processor and ram look good.

Do you already have your hard drives and dvd drives?

I have had good luck with Abit MBs so think you will be ok if you like that one. I did use a P5K on my last build and it was problem free also. Agree with Shadow that you could probably downgrade on video card if you dont game at all. Depending on what you plan on doing you could probably get by with something under $100. Hard to recommend not knowing exactly what you are looking for.

For PSU you will be fine with anything around 500 w. The corsair shadow mentioned is an excellent unit and I think it is still on sell at Newegg.

As long as you stay with SATA you will be fine for HD and Burners. Generally recommend Lite on for burners and WD/Seagate for HD, but there are other good brands out there also.

Remember, if you eventually go to 8 GB of ram as you mention, you will need a 64 bit OS to recognize it. 4 GB with a 32 bit OS works out pretty good because you get to pair it and use 3.5 GB or so, but moving to 8 would be a waste without switching to a 64 bit OS.

Thank you so much for the reply. i like asus board and all my pass board have been asus. it's easier to handle especially for a guy like me who have no knowledge of tweaking the voltage that sort of stuff. lol... i just want a board to plug in my stuff and ready to go... lol.. unfortunately the asus have low review ratings from new egg.
i dont know what or why i need such a system.. but i just want a decent one. occasionaly video editing, photo editing... etc. nothing extreme. dont want to upgrade at least for a while. lol...
the reason i chose that power supply is.. from what i have read .. all these new component requires alot of power. so i want a power supply that can handle all my components. i have 1 WD 80gig sata HD for Vista, 1 500gig sata HD for storage, along with 2 500gig for storage as well and 1 or maybe 2 DVD burner.
at first, i was looking at this one:
COOLMAX CUG-700B ATX 12V( V.2.2) 700W Power Supply 115/ 230 V - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159058
But this power supply has only 3 +12V rails compare to the Thermaltake which has 4 +12v rails. (what the heck is the +12v rail for?). If a 650W is enough to power all my components, then i will look for a replacement.
As far as the video card, i need your opinion then, since the nvidia 9600 is a overkill. the 8800gt is too much for my pocket. i heard the 7950gt is good, but newegg dont have it anymore.
so the only option left is the 8600 ??? i need a 512mb video card recommendation.

again, thank you .....
