My parts list for £1000 budget 1st Build.
Hi all,
Ive just drawn up a list of parts that hopefully can fit snugly under one roof, without any complications. But for all i know there could be a few, so can someone please give a bit of advice on whats what, and of course suggest anything you like! What i want to build is a gaming pc that can use Sli graphics, has overclocking potential, and can be used to play movies through my HD tv. Also i intend to keep it for a few years, but dont mind if its noisy. If certain parts dont make a good marriage, do say! Im not too clued up on certain aspects, especially mobo's and using 8800GTX in SLI. Though i plan on buying a second 8800GTX at a later date. Also, on the topic, theres so many brands of 8800GTX! Which one takes the trophy? Or is it best to get the Asus, as its the same brand as the mobo. Actually ill list the questions so its quicker to read 2) I plan on going SLI so is the PSU going to give enough juice? 3) Is the mobo compatible with SLI, and can it utilize the capabilty of the 8800GTX? 4) Will it be able to connect to my TV, and do i need to buy a monitor at all? 5) Can the CPU support 64bit Vista? 6) Sorry for all the questions, haha. 7) Can someone reccommend a case that can keep it fairly cool, without using H20 cooling (couldnt afford it anyway) 8) Should i get an after market heatsink/cooler? Thats about it, okay heres the bits: CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad Core Retail (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...11cc1f4cf795cb) Mobo: Asus P5N32E-SLI 680i (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...79f6a09890689f) or Asus P5N32E-SLI PLUS (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...79f6a09890689f) RAM: OCZ 2GB 800Mhz (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/343397...y/Product.html) GPU: Nvidia 8800GTX - Need help with the brand PSU: 650W 120mm Fan HDD: Maxtor 500GB DiamondMax 22 7200 rpm 32MB Cache (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...11cc1f4cf795cb) Optical: LiteOn 20x Retail (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/product_in...11cc1f4cf795cb) Case: ATX case with room for extra fans, please reccommend. Everything else will be bought locally, there should be room in the budget. Any advice is welcome! Thanks in advance. |

Welcome to PC Mech magic79.
I am by no means an expert but i will try to give you some advice based on what the pros on this forum have recommended to me. First of all i would recommend the new G92 version of the 8800 GTS 512mb, it is actually faster than the GTX and is also cheaper. EVGA is usually recommended as the best brand of GPU on this forum. SLI is usually not recommended here. Apparently 1 of the new seres of GPUs is better than two of the older ones. The new 9800 GX2 is out now and the GX2 is apparently twice as fast as an 8800 ultra, you may want to check out one of those. The people on this forum usually recommend Corsair ram. I would say get this stuff. CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) I would change that HDD to a Seagate 7200.10 500gb HDD. It is usually recommended as the best quality. I realy like this case, lots of cooling and is big enough to fit all of your stuff for sure. Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Corsair is usually recommended as the best brand of PSU on this forum. I cant comment on if 650w would be enough though. But one of the Corsairs is the way to go. Everything else i either cant answer or sounds fine as you have it. Hope that was helpful

2) If going SLI check out this site to be sure you get one big enough. I would say 650 is way to small for 8800 GTXs.
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html 3) The mobo is compatable, but if going SLI I would recommend moving to a 750i or 780i. those are the new ones and support the newer 45mm CPUs which you might want to move up to in the future. The Q6600 is built on the 65 mm platform so it will work fine with the 6xxi series chipsets. 4) As to connecting to a TV that depends on what type of connections the TV has. Some newer TVs will connect up as monitors, but most wont and you will need an extra card. I have never done that so will leave recommendations to others. 5) The CPU will support 64 bit vista. 6) No problem, that’s why this form is here, to answer questions. 7) The Antec 900 is a nice case for cooling. But if not OC’ing the system a great deal just about any of the newer cases will work also. Look for something with 120 mm fans. Two fans at a minimum, but a lot of the nicer cases use 3-4 to keep the air moving around more. 8) You don’t need an aftermarket cooler unless you plan on OC’ing the system. The standard heatsink works fine and using an aftermarket unit will void your warranty on the processors. If you plan on OC’ing the system then you will probably want something a bit better. As for your list: Nice CPU Check out the 780i mobos Ram looks good, but if going for 64 bit OS get 4gb (2 x 2 gb) Personally I would go with an 8800 GT or GTS. If you can swing it you might check out the new 9800 GT. The 8800 GTX is getting a bit old and way over priced in the current market. PSU, you will need something bigger for SLI, check out the link I posted above. It really depends on what cards you will be using, but think 750-800 is minimum with the GTX. HDD, I don’t like Maxtor, have had a lot of problem personally. I would go with Seagate or WD myself. Optical, good choice. Case, check out the Antec 900. if you need quiet you might look at the Antec 182. This is really a personal choice and there are lots of good cases out there. Kat
