new computer
hi.. my current sys is not able to run new games anymore !! i have a p4 3ghz 6200 geforce 256 mb and 1 gig ram
so i decided its time to start moving .. this time i want a strong system that will last at least 5 years so i can use some help with some parts and with cost estimation .. here is my planes about the matter based on new egg prices : 1_ Intel® Core™2 Duo processor E8400 = $249.99 2_ EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640MB = $250 3_ 4 gig Corsair ddr2 ram in 4 sticks 140$ 4_ i have no idea on mother boards at all and i would like to learn what ship i should use with the above settings i dont care for low budget but i dont want over priced things also, i just need a good one that would match in quality with the strong cpu and vga and make them work perfectly 5_ also haw much power supply do i need for that? a 500 w is enough? _ would be getting any hard drive with a 100$ or so what eals do i need more ? will that be all? thanks |

First of all, what is your total budget?
Are you planning to re-use anything from your existing computer? You might want to look at 550 watts as the minimum amount of power output for the power supply. Cricket

well a 1000 $ would be ok i guess i would pay an extra 100 or 200 to balance the machine if needed
so if we calculated the above cpu and vga and ram and hard drive we will have 740 $ so that leaves a 260 or a 360 $ for mb and psu i plan to use my lg monitor so i wont need a new expensive one .. well my cd player is ok also so we wont need that .. thanks _ i dont want a minimum power supply with the power hog cards am getting . i dont want them to fall into shortages Last edited by id10x; 03-27-2008 at 05:10 PM. |

1. Good processor.
2. Look at the newer 8800 GT or GTS with the G92 GPU. They are labeled 512 MB. They are much faster than the older 640 GTS. 3. Make sure the ram is 800, with that processor you should move up from 667. 4. The Asus P5K is a great P35 MB for that system. 5. 500 will work for a single video card set up, but to give a bit of headroom you might look at 550 w or so. The Corsair 550 is a fantastic choice and last I looked was on sell. Just make sure whatever you buy is a good unit. Check out this list. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 6. For HD look at the Seagate 7200.11 series. WD also makes good HDs. The newer ones have 32 mb cache which helps seek times. Be sure it is SATA. 7. Lite on makes good low cost burners (~$33). Be sure to get SATA and if you buy retail you get free Nero software. 8. OS, go with XP Home or Vista Home Premium. I would stick with 32 bit for now, not much 64 bit software available and there are some compatibility issues with older software and peripherals. Kat

The new 9600 GT is a big step up from the 8600 GT but still performas a bit below the 8800 GT and GTS (G92 models). The new 9800 is also out put you pay quite a premium for it. Check out this review to help you make a choice
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/...ming_graphics/ Here is a link to the 8800 GT with 512 MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130318 Corsair 550 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139004 P5K-E: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131225 Seagate 7200.11 500 gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288 Kat |

Yeah, it gets a little confusing
The vid card you have selected is a G80 core 8800GTS. They come in 320 and 640mb variants. The 8800gt 512mb Katreat lists is based off of the G92 core. The 8800gts with 512mb memory is also based off of the G92 core. The 9600gt is based off of the G94 core, but it is slower because it's a budget card. 8800gts 512mb (g92) > > 8800gt 512mb (g92) > 9600gt 512mb (g94) > > > 8800gts 320mb (g80) |

The CPU you have listed is an OEM. There is only a 1 year warranty instead of 3 years on this and you don't get a stock heatsink which will be a major problem if you don't order one separately.
Also, it is out of stock. |

I would go with a 7200.11 500 GB 7200 HD instead of the raptor. The new 32 mb cache 7200 drives have really closed the gap and are not all that much slower. You just get a lot more bang for your buck (GB/$). However, the raptors are faster so if you think the speed is worth it go for it.
I agree that you should pay for a good PSU but 700w is a lot of over head for your system. You would be fine with 550w + so you might take a look at some of the smaller offerings and save a few dollars. The Corsair 550 is a very good unit for under $100. Is your old burner IDE. If it is you might think about replacing with a SATA unit. Lite-on retail burners will run around $30. The newer MB no longer support IDE natively so the IDE port is a third party controller which can be problomatic at times. Just a thought. Kat Kat Last edited by Katreat; 03-28-2008 at 03:50 PM. |

The Corsair 550W PSU that Katreat linked to earlier will power your build fine.
For about $70 less, you could get a 500GB Seagate hdd, if you wanted too. Also if you can afford it, I would certainly go with a new SATA DVDRW over your old, IDE one. (Because of the reasons posted by Katreat - with the IDE controller issue) |
