Welcome to PCMech.

Looks good. You need to swap out the RAM for DDR2-800. Corsair is a great brand though.

Do you need Windows or an optical drive? For the latter, we recommend LiteOn brand DVD Burners.

id10x, the Stacker 830 is about $250 on its own and the included 1000w power supply runs about $200, so that price is not terribly unrealistic. It is a fantastic case.

Okay, would this be a good memory replacement?

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&sku=O261-7054

And the reason for the 450$ case is that 1. Cases are basically futureproof, chances are I won't need to buy another. 2. It's a full tower, it has enough room for whatever I may dream up. And 3. It comes with a 1000w power supply, which should suit my needs just fine, especially with SLI.

Don't worry about it. My current load is worth about 2000$, I probably won't be able to afford it in the end.

Any other recommendations? Mind you I'm hoping to game like mad.

I would recommend using Newegg.com if you can, Tigerdirect does not have the best reputation for service. If in Canada you can check out Ncix.com

What size monitor will you be using this system with? The reason I ask is that SLI really shines on very large monitors (like 28” +) where a single video card may have difficulties handling the resolutions.

You are spending $350-400 to run your system in SLI (+100PSU, +50-100MB, +$200 2nd GPU). Add that much money to the 1st video card and you are spending a total of $550-600 for video. For that kind of many you could buy a new 9800GX2. From the few test I have seen with that card it would wipe the floor with two 8800 GTs in SLI.

Anyway, it is something to think about.

I think I will take your advice afterall. The 9800GX2 seems more future proof. Any more suggestions?

Sorry for the double post.

There is no such thing as future proofing. 9800GX2 or the 3870X2 will own any game out there and will handle any game coming out in the next 2 years.
I know a lot of people who still game with 7900GTX, X1950XTX cards and they are playing the newest games on the market at full blast without a glitch.

Okay, would it be worth switching the case with this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&sku=A406-1069

And this power supply:

NZXT makes good cases I have built many machines with them. Ultra makes garbage, I would not buy anything with the Ultra name on it. I recommend, FSP, Sparkle, Antec and Seasonic for power supplies. Antec and Seasonic come with a 5 year warranty!
Why are you still shopping at tigerdirect? go to newegg.com man and save.

Newegg doesn't seem to have as good deals to me. Nor does it have the same quality products, but moving on, I've decided to switch once again to a slightly more expensive case, but loaded with fans and space. Check it out.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&sku=A406-1073

Note: I'm still using the PSU that I had planned, the 1000w one. The piece of garbage that comes with this is going to someone else. And if the Ultra one breaks or anything, it has a 3 year warranty. Sorry for making all these changes, just trying to build the best I can.

Xion cases are ok, they not high end but they are not bad either, don't be surprised if you get it with some hardware missing. If you are happy with tigerdirect then good luck. When the Ultra goes out on you it won't go out alone it will take out the mobo and probably the CPU and video card. Most of us on this forum giving you advice are very experienced, trust me when I tell you that Ultra is a huge mistake regardless of their warranty.

Okay... So my plan went all to hell. Here's my new set up:

Barebones kit:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?EdpNo=3746821
Graphics cards (2 of them)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?EdpNo=3048552

Can anyone recommend a better set-up? My budget is around 1000-1500 dollars. Thanks.

the OCZ power supply is excellent however those 2 cards are a waste of time, the Ultra case you are showing is still an Ultra, anything and everything Ultra makes is worthless. I made the mistake about 3 years ago of buying 30 of those cases for a build, every single one of them was defective in one way or the other and had to throw out all the power supplies because they were total junk and failed the most basic tests.
Here is a great case that will do everything you want and has a great power supply. For your first build don't go nuts with the hardware, buy lesser hardware that won't give you issues and hassles, the higher end the equipment the more knowledge you need to have.
Here is what I recommend for you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129024
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180 if you going Intel
Any core2duo or quad you feel fits your budget and this video card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130334
For Ram Kingston, crucial or Corsair in DDR2 800 if you going with 2GB get a pair sold together.
Good luck

You definitely don't need a 1000w pwoer supply.
You don't want that barebones kit.
Those graphics cards are horrible and not worthy of an sli rig.

Asus P35, non sli board
Q6600 or e8400

8800gts

650w p/s

4gb ddr2 800

500gb hd

Comes out to $956 without monitor, keyboard, mouse, case, speakers.

Plus theres lots of stuff you could change. You could upgrade your p/s and get a 9800gx2 or 3870x2. You could upgrade your mobo and get 2 8800gts sli, both will cost under $1300 still wihtout the rest of the stuff.

This is just a suggestion!

Okay, here's what I've got, and I think I can afford it:

DVD Burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129018

Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133021

Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136185

Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130318

PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104015

Keyboard and Mouse
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823126176

RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144064

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188024

Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115040

The total comes to 1354$. I think I can get a cheaper motherboard, I just don't know what would be compatible with what I have. Future SLi compatabilities would be good, but not required.

Thats a great rig, excellent choices. If you dont need SLI go with the P5K Asus motherboard.

Thanks. One problem, it won't let me put my full postal code in the bar. Only allows 5 digits, I'm in canada and we use 6. Does newegg ship to canada?

Why would I get SATA? I thought you couldn't install XP onto a SATA drive without a floppy or something along those lines.

Eeks, $100 for a keyboard and mouse? You could save some $$$ there and get a less expensive case.
Cases with sidefans believe it or not usually have worse air flow/cooling. You can definitely save a bunch of money on the board if you don't want sli in the future and you go with what khalil recommended.

What kind of hard drive would I need to have in order to install windows without the floppy? And what's the cheapest graphics card that can run Crysis fluently on medium DX9 settings? I'd like at least 30-40FPS on Crysis, that way I'd be fairly certain to run any other game on the market currently.

Who told you that you needed a floppy to install XP on Sata? SATA works just like IDE when installing windows, you are confusing Raid drivers and SATA.

Also, just so that you know, OEM processors do NOT come with a heatsink and fan. If you buy an OEM processor, you'll have to buy the heatsink and fan separtely. Retail processors do come with the heatsink and fan.

Okay, new question: How safe is liquid cooling? I want my system overclockable, but I don't want noise, and that seems possible with water cooling. But is it putting my system at risk of a leak?
