New build. Nothing displaying on the monitor.

So like so many others on in this area. This is my first time building my own PC. Bought everything brand new.

I put it all together and it boots up. Fans spin, LEDs light up, Hard drive starts up, but no display on the monitor! I tried the 'Having problems with a new build? Try this!' 10 step thing but with the same result. Hardware is as fallows...

MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard
AMD Phenom 9500
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB PCIe
Thermaltake Purepower 500w
Hanns 19" LCD Monitor
Kingston Hyperx 2GB PC6400 800MHz (I think that's the right link)

Is something I have not compatible? Or maybe the Motherboard is faulty? I have no idea...

Did you remove the motherboard from the case when doing the troubleshooting steps of HAL9000's troubleshooter?

Did you plug in all necessary power connectors on the motherboard? The 24 pin and 4 pin 12v connectors?

Yes, I removed the motherboard and placed it on top of the box it came in.
Yes, I plugged both power connectors.

Still come up with the 'check video cable' blank screen...

I also just tried the Video Card on all the available PCIe slots. Still no display.

Would it be the video card that isn't working or the Motherboard you think?

switched the sticks of RAM I got, turns out one of them was bogus. Went and got it replaced with a new one. Problem solved! Thanks for all the help anyways. That 10 step troubleshooting thing is pretty nifty!
