First timer needs feed back

I am looking to build a good gaming/video editing pc. I have decided on on an intel E8400 for the CPU. My main concerns are to try and keep it below $1000. I also want to be able to run COD4 and WOW well because these are what I want to play mostly. I also want a black case that cools well and has a front door. I don't care for the gamer cases with all the lights.
Any opinions on how this build might perform?

Do you need to include the OS, monitor and/or peripherals into the budget?

No fat, just the lean machine

Nope, I already have A 19" falt LCD with like 8 ms. A Logitech 15 keyboard and mouse. And some 7.1 speakers. Just need the Tower, and a good DVD burner. I would like the tower or mobo to have a firewire port since that it what I use to transfer digital movies from my camera.

OS, still deciding

I have Win XP Pro (retail ver.) So I can use it. I have been reading up on Win Vista and many people seem to have problems with it. My problems with XP have been minimal, so I will stick with it for now to keep costs down. I may want Vista in the future, so I will want it Vista capable.

everything here looks good; for a 19" monitor, the 8800gts will be able to handle both those games really well, probably high-max settings for everything. 2gb of ram is plenty, and the dual core will keep apps snappy. Only thing i would say is to get an actual psu, maybe 450W-500W+, instead of using the lame one provided with the case.

8800GTS will easily max both those games. Enlight PSU's are reasonably good quality but it may not be enough wattage/amperage for this rig.

how do you determine wattage?

How do I determine wattage? Does 80 plus cert mean much? Recommend a 500W PSU?

Build looks compatable. I would recommend:

500+ watt PSU. I know you are on a tight budget but a quality PSU is very important and you want at least 500w for that system in my opinion. A good option is the Antec Sonota case/psu combo. Quality 500w PSU and nice case, think it has a door. Check out this list for quality PSUs:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Move to a 7210.11 HD, twice the cache.

People been haveing some issues with Samsung opticals, would suggest going with Lite-on. Be sure to buy SATA and get retail if you need burning software.

On my 8800 GTS 320 I play wow steady with 60+ FPS, but for the money right now, unless you found a great deal, you should look to the 9600 GT or 8800 GT for the sweet spot in the market. Should be in the same price range.

Can save money on ddr2-800 ram. Anythin more than that isn't needed unless overclocking.

Rosewill have really low quality power supplies, take a look at this one instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171016

Take a look at this faster video card for the same price as the one in your list: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130334

That's the same mobo/CPU combo I'm getting. One thing I decided to do to save money is to cut back to 2 GBs of RAM, not a huge save really but you can get higher quality for a good bit cheaper.

Also, get the 7200.11 500gb hard drive.

Change the power supply.

And I would recommend lite-on or asus dvd drive.

Looking at suggestions

My Mobo only supports PCI-E x16, the Geforce 9 series card that was recommended was PCI-E 2.0. So, it wouldn't be worth it right? I'm still reading about the whole 2.0 thing.

I did take the advice about the PSU and the memory. I can always get more memory later if I decide to upgrade to a 64 bit OS.

The card and the motherboard will work fine together. PCI-e 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-e 1.0. Only the top end cards (3870 X2, 9800GX2) show noticible inprovement using a 2.0 motherboard.

Video card

So, the PCI 2.0 will work on PCI 1.0 but it won't be running things as fast as it could.

Presumably it would be faster than the 1.0 but wouldn't I have to get a different mobo to use it's full potential?

The connection would be faster but you wouldn't notice the difference with a card other than the ultra high end. And yes you would need a new motherboard using either the new nVidia or AMD chipsets. It's not really worth it with the bandwidth required by todays cards, its more of a be ready for future cards that will benefit.

Change Mobo?

So, Should I change the Mobo to one that has a PCI-E 2.0 slot? Any suggestions?

There is little advantage in changing to a PCI-E 2.0 slot. It is a feature that will someday likely show some performance gains but currently has little utilization. IMO there is no reason to chose a MB based on it being PCI-E 2.0 or 1.0. If you wanted to spend more on a MB I would be looking at more features that will benefit you today and in the near future.

I would still recommend you change out your 8800 GTS 320 for the newer 9600 GT or if you have a couple of dollars the spare the 8800 GT. The G92 GPU made a significant inprovement in performance over the older GPU that card uses and the price is very compairable.

Even though the card is PCIe 2.0, it doesn't require more bandwidth than the current PCIe 1.0, so whether you have a motherboard with PCIe 2.0 or 1.0, you'll get pretty much the same performance out of the card (I'm currently using the 9600GT on a PCIe 1.0 motherboard and getting similar results as if it was running on a PCIe 2.0 motherboard).
