First Build. Big Problem
So I've decided to build my first PC and I've run into a problem.
First off, my specs: -XCLIO Windtunnel Fully Black Finish 1.0 mm SECC Chassis ATX Full Tower Computer Case -XFX MB-N780-ISH9 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI Intel Motherboard -BFG Tech BFGE88512GTSE GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card -XCLIO GREATPOWER X14S4P4 ATX12V 700W Power Supply - A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model ADQVE1B16K -Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 -Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive -SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B -Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64Bit SP2C Alright, now I've installed everything and everything has power. I can turn the computer on and get to the main BIOS screen. Now with the computer being on for like 5 min, everything shuts down and the computer turns off. I try and turn it on again and everything is running again. But this time it takes like 2 min and everything shuts down again. I called a friend of mine and he says it could be heat. But the Xclio Windtunnel has 2 gigantic fans on the side and an exhaust fan on the rear. The front panel also has not gone over 40 degrees celius. I've looked in the manual for help and theres none. They talked about CMOS Jumper which I have no idea what that is about. As far as the build went, I hooked everything up to the motherboard and power supply. Nothing about jumpers and switches on the motherboard or power supply. |

The CMOS jumper is a physical jumper on your motherboard, which you manually change in order to clear all BIOS settings, but considering that this is a newly-built, and you haven't seemed to have ravaged the BIOS settings just yet, I'd say that isn't the problem. Try resetting the CMOS jumper anyways.
Make certain that you really did install everything correctly, because even if you're typing right now that you did, we're all human. You may have made a vital wiring mistake by accident. There's a great thread about BYOC troubleshooting here. Follow all of the instructions there, they may just save your build. There's also always a chance that your motherboard and/or psu are faulty, but check everything else before assuming that any parts are faulty. Last edited by carrotcake12; 04-19-2008 at 12:58 AM. |

Thanks for the tip and the jumper info.
Unfortunately, everything works when I take it out of the case and did what that link told me to do. I did find something though. When I turn the computer on and the black screen shows up, it doesn't read my hard drive. It shows SATA 6 and then nothing in the spot. Its supposed to say either the hard drive or something like "no hardware found". I did try other SATA cables and power cables and its all the same. So could that be the reason behind the computer turning off? Should I send the hard drive back? |

What about the heatsink, CPU fan, thermal grease? Did you do all that right?

It does sound like an overheating issue.
Make sure the cpu heatsink is completely installed and that all 4 pins are still secured fully. When you did the out of case build with just the bare essentials, did it still shut down?

No shutting down. The heatsink on the processor is kind of loose. The thing doesn't just screw down, it clicks into place. Once you click it into place, it wont let you try again. Unfortunately, I messed up on one of them and the fan/heatsink is kind of loose.
Could that be the problem? |

One pin not locked down on the Intel heatsinks is enough to cause the CPU to overheat and shut down.

Exactly. You need to try again, and make sure all 4 are proper inserted.
