hey Hardball

Overall it seems like a good system, but I think you should consider a few things.

Firstly, the processor. I would look at a Q6600, as its about the same price and can easily be overclocked to 3ghz + (mine is running at 3.4ghz on air). This would give you 4 cores running at the same speed as the 6850 for the same price. If you do go with this option, it would also be worth getting some faster ram to give you some headroom if you really wanted to push the CPU.

Secondly the motherboard. Are you planning to buy a second card and run SLI? If so then obviously you have to stick with an Nvidia board, but if not I would seriously consider a P35 board, as they tend to be faster and more stable under overclocking, as well as having more features for the price.

I would also consider getting a hard drive with 16mb of cache as they really are not much more expensive and offer better performance.

Other than that its just down to your personal preferences I guess, not having a DVD-RW seems strange as does only having 160gb of HDD, and getting vista basic also seems like a strange choice given the fact the only real reasons for buying vista come in the premium version, but thats down to you and what going to be using it for I guess.

Also be ware that you'll need the 64bit version of vista in order to use all 4gb of your memory, otherwise windows will only recognize ~3gb and a single program will only be able to use 2 of that.

let us know what you decide on

If looking for a dual core, look at the e8400 instead.

You could drop the video card down to a 8800gts 512 for nearly identical performance, or even go up to a 9800gtx.

If getting only one video card, look at the asus p5k or p5k-e motherboards.

Look at the Seagate 7200.11 series of hard drives. They have more cache.

My opinion is that vista basic isn't worth it. Either get xp then, or go for vist home premium.

Only changes I would make is get ddr2-800 ram unless you plan on overclocking.

And get a sata hard drive. I still say look at the 7200.11 series.

I know case is a personal choice but $400 is way overboard. You have no need for a 1000 w PSU with this build. You should be a able to pick up a primium case for under $150 and an quality PSU, maybe 600-650 watts or so, for around $100 and save a lot of money.

Definately trade out the IDE HD and get SATA. IDE is on its way out and the MB does not offer native IDE support. It is provided by a 3rd party controller and can be problomatic. Like shadow posted, go for the newer 7200.11 and get more cache for faster seek times.

Yea I think the case is overpriced too but that is the one he wants. He also eventually wants to get a second video card so I don't think it's too bad of a choice.

I dont see a mother board in your last list. If he is set on SLI, which is the only reason he would ever need a 1000 w PSU, then take a look at the new 780i boards. I dont think the 650i and 680i will support the new 45 nm processors.

I got an SLI board and a 7600GT with the hopes of going SLI as an upgrade.

Bad choice.

In almost all scenarios, the next generation card is better and cheaper than going SLI in the older generation. Unless your friend is running an enormous display, the benefits you get from SLI are minimal.

Send a message via AIM to Drunner611
Tell your friend he could watercool/buy faster components instead of wasting money on a stupid case and power supply. You can have a much faster computer, but it may not look as nice.
Who Cares?
