How long does it take to determine if CPU is overheating?

I just installed an Asus P5E and swapped my old Thermaltake Big Typhoon CPU cooler for a Cooler Master TX2.

I'm wondering how long it usually takes to determine if my CPU temps are stable and there's no risk of overheating, without any Overclocking. I notice my temps are bit higher than with the Big Typhoon, but I wanted a lighter CPU cooler and the TX2 had good reviews. I'm checking the temps in the BIOS periodically and it's at around 43C right now.

I know this a safe temp but I assume if I've been running my PC for most of the day and it was going to overheat, it would have done so by now, right?

Thanks in advance

Could use a program like coretemp to monitor the temps.

Also, try running orthos and seewhat the temps get up to. It will most likely never reach those temps during normal use.

Actually I was using Coretemp almost exclusively before installing these new components. I hardly ever checked the temps in my BIOS. One of the first things I did was reinstall Coretemp and noticed the hgher temp readings and then went into the BIOS to check. I noticed a big discrepency between the two.

Coretemp gives readings anywhere from 55-62 C so I don't now if I can trust it anymore or if I did something wrong (too little or too much Artic Silver 5 or perhaps something else) when I installed the cooler.

I never heard of Orthos. After a Google search, I read that it can perhaps too much stress on your CPU and possibly reduce its life? Is this true?

Thanks again

You could try Intel's TAT. Wouldn't think Intel would write software to burn up their own chips ... hmmm ... or would they?

Orthos will stress your processor. That will produce heat, aznd show you what your temps would be at their highest.

Those temps seem a bit high for idle, especially with an aftermarket cooler.

Might want to make sure the heatsink is installed properly. Also, don't use too much thermal paste.

I'm going to pull the cooler off again and reapply it. Something I was trying to avoid but it looks like I have no choice.

I'm probably going to use the Big Typhoon again instead of the TX2. I didn't find out until after purchasing the TX2 that it only gives medium performance and is not really a big overclocking cooler. I don't OC a lot but I'd like to have better cooling when I do. Hopefully the extra weight of the Big Typhoon won't make that much difference-I hope.

Thanks

I am a big fan of using stock HSF with both AMD and Intel. I don't OC at all. Make sure you are cleaning the surface with pure acetone before you re-apply the new paste.
I had to RMA 8 Core2Duos this year for over heating issues. I hope you kept the original HSF in case you have to send back the CPU.
