New Build Complete - Excessive RAM use?
Hi,
Ive just built my new pc, most things have run smoothly but one thing I noticed was the volume of ram that was being used on idle. Via the task manager I can see that my ram useage is between 0.8GB and 1.1GB again on idle. Now I have 4GB installed so I have a reasonable amount to play with but this seems a little high to me? As its a new build I havent installed anything on it. A clean install with all the vista updates done. Mobo drivers, gfx drivers, sound drivers etc installed. Im new to Vista. My version is Vista Premium and have heard it is more of a resource hog but is this use of ram normal? It wasnt anything near this with XP. Heres my spec list. Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe 790FX AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition Zalman CNPS9700-NT Antec 900 Corsair Dominator TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF (x2) Maxtor Diamondmax 22 500GB SATA-II Asus 7900GTX 512mb Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer - Fatal1ty Pro Series Tagan 600W PSU Thanks, Chris |

What you're seeing is normal. Windows will use as much RAM as it needs to, in order to run at its maximum smoothness, as long as you have plenty available. Since you have 4GB, the OS knows you have plenty spare. This is why 1GB of RAM is the minimum for Vista; if you only had 1GB installed, this would force it to use much less than the usage you're seeing, but it would run less well as a result.

Open up task manager, go to processes, and select the list by resource amount. What are your top 5 consumers of ram?

I used to run Vista Basic and it would easily hog up 1GB of RAM. What you are seeing is normal.

Agreed. That's normal.
Enjoy your build.

It's not necessarily a bad thing either in your case. You paid for it why not use it. It will probably speed up your computer since loading programs from RAM is much faster than your hard drive.

Cheers everyone. I will take your word for it. Seems to perform fine with only a few glitches appearing.
I guess its a good thing I chose a decent amount of ram! |
