Best gaming rig @$800?

Hi all, it has been 6 years since I built my last computer and have only slightly upgraded it since and I believe it has come time for me to build a new computer. My friend linked me to this site and said you did very good with his so I'll try my luck here too.

I have the HDs,mouse/kb,monitor,speakers etc. So I really only need a case, psu, mobo(2 pci-e slots), cpu, video card dvd burner, heatsink if needed, and ram. So if anyone is bored could you tell me what you would buy for a gaming rig if you were in my shoes? Thanks!

Do you need an OS? Why do you need a motherboard with 2 PCIe slots, SLI and Crossfire is only worth it if you are using a really high resolution monitor and spending over $2000 on the computer.

I have an OS, going to stay with XP pro. The above setupo looks nice, would I need a better heatsink if I OC the cpu?

If you overclock, a better heatsink would be a good idea depending on how much you are overclocking. Take a look at the Artic Cooling Freezer 64 for AMD or Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for Intel, both are easy to install, are relatively inexpensive and provide good performance.

Also with the RAM being so cheap I was thinking about gettin another set of 2gb for 42.99. Is that overdoing it?

If getting 4gb, I would get a 2x2gb kit instead of 4x1gb kits.

I doubt it would improve gaming much, if at all. But depending on what other uses you have, it could make other applications a bit smoother.

This is also a good set of ram and costs a little bit less (if you don't factor in the mail in rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146692

Also what about amd quad core processor?
Is it much better than dual core?

Was eyeing this one but is it worth the extra 120 bucks? Also they have a combo with a 950 watt psu with it.

If you're going to spend that much on a quad core system, go with Intel. Currently a 2.5ghz intel 45nm quad is faster than a 3.0ghz overclocked 9850.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4701/cpuqs2.png

Look at the Q9300 vs. the 9850.

Quad core is not better for most applications. Very few current applications take advantage of more than 2 cores. The quad is more future proof because now that they are becomming more common it is likely that software will be developed to take advantage of them. So, if you want the best performance today go for the fastest processor which for the price will likely be a duel core. If you want to be more future proof then the quad is a good choice.

I agree with Katreat, go with an Intel core 2 duo as opposed to a quad core for gaming. It will be a long long time before games are using quad core. I can really only think of maybe 10 games that even use 2 cores. The core 2's have a higher clock which is more important for gaming.
Masaki's setup is very nice but I personally would go with a core2 setup.

If you are sticking with XP dont bother with 4gb of ram it can only read 3.25gb.

I would get it up and running first, then go and read the overclocking sticky. There's a lot of good info in there.

Got it all put together and tried booting it up. Turns on, all fans are running(including the video card) but no screen or a beep. Unplugged everything but the video card. Still no beep or anything. Any ideas?

Did you make sure the video card is getting power through its own power connector?
Are your Memory sticks seated properly?
If yes,
Take it out of the case plug everything back into it and test it. Make sure the motherboard is sitting on the cardboard box and not on the bag it came in.

Here is the troubleshooting procedure: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409

Be sure you have both the 24pin ATX power and the 4pin power connections in place on the motherboard.

You already did the bench test? Out of the case?

Do you happen to have another PCI Express video card you can use to test? Maybe someone you know got one?

I put in my old pci-e video card and it booted so it must be my video card. I dunno if it is the case or what but it won't seed completely so that is the problem. I read a couple reviews about the new 9800 gtx being too big for the Antec 900. Anyone else heard of this? Will completely take out the mobo tomorrow to see if it is the case or mobo hindering it from completely seeding.

Also one quick question. The gtx 9800 has 2 6pin power connectors to it. Do I hook up one or both of the 6 pins?
