Recommend Power Supply

I purchased a 520 watt OCZ Powerstream power supply a few years ago. I figured that kind of power would last me a long time. Not so.
Now EVGA 8 and 9 series cards require at least 550 watts plus headroom. Before I make the same mistake-

Should I go all out and get 1000 Watts ? Or more ? Who knows whats around the corner. My main concern is any drawbacks to high power supplies. Are there any such as excessive heat ?

I am a gamer, familiar with SLI, using full size Intel boards.

A 520w power supply is still enough power for an 8800GT/S card. I would go a notch higher for a GTX/Ultra or the 9800GTX.

1000w is only necessary for SLI, which we don't recommend using anyway.

If you're a gamer in the market for a high end card like the 9800GTX, I'd get a 600w unit from a quality brand and you'll be fine.

I would recommend Tagan as a manufacturer when choosing.

Would of thought a 700w psu would be good for quite a while. Cant see many builds needing more than that.

I think the only single card that recomends 600w is the 9800GX2 so getting 650 or so should be fine for quite a while. figuring that the X2 is not really the norm I doubt that many single video cards are going to push much past it for a while.

Would this be a good power supply?

Antec EA500 ATX 12V 500W Power Supply for ATX Cases

I just ordered this power supply and was wondering if it is any good.

Yes I'm still using an AGP slot and just need 500w at the moment.

I also just bought a new Video card the 3850 need a bigger power supply don't wanna put alot of money into my system right now since AGP is out dated. But don't wanna get rid of it just yet. I'm sure this will be my last update on the system till I build another one.

Antec PSUs are generally very reliable. I have never had a problem with them and they always seem to make the good side of PSU lists, even if they dont take top honors.
