Questions about a new Intel build
It's been a while since I built the PC in my sig, so I'm a little behind the times as far as hardware compatibility stuff. But here's what I'm looking at right now, my priorities are stability, moderate gaming, and possibly CAD/3D rendering:
Antec 300 case http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811129042 Antec Neopower 550 power supply http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817103941 Intel P35 motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813121314 Intel C2D E6850 cpu http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115028 2 x 1GB Corsair DDR2 667 memory http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145098 Sapphire Radeon X1950XTX PCI-express video card http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814102045 Seagate SATA 7200.10 250GB hard drive http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148262 Lite-on SATA DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106073 Cost would be around $700. I've stuck with brands I've used before and been happy with. I may go for more RAM and possibly a DX10 video card, but would like to keep cost under $1000 total. OS will be Windows XP, may go to Vista later. Is the mobo/cpu/ram combination OK? I'm not quite sure how the speeds are supposed to relate to each other. Also, I'm not certain about the power supply. Is 550W enough? Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Instead of the e6850, get the e8400.
I would get this ram for a bit of head room: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 Would get this hard drive for only $5 more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148316 Get the retail version of that lite-on and get nero software for only like $3 or $5 more.

I agree with shadows recomendations. As for PSU 550 w should handle that set up fine. Going larger would just be headroom for future video card upgrades and to be honest even 550 will handle everythinig shy of the 9800 GX2. I would persoanlly go up a step in video card if you do much gaming at all. If you want to play most the newer games at respectable settings I would recomend something like a 9600 GT or 3870.

As I look at better video cards, I see PCI Express x16 and PCI Express 2.0 x16. Will a 2.0 card work in the mobo I listed, which only shows having a standard x16 slot?

I've read that intel mobos can be picky about RAM voltage. Does anyone have experience with Corsair XMS in an intel P35 mobo? I did find intel certified RAM (Crucial) for the P35, about $5 less.

Mushkin has some good ram modules which can be found for about the same price as the corsair ones you have on the list, but has higher speed, a heatsink and works on the P35 chipset without problems (the voltages are 1.8 and Cas latency is 5).

Are Antec PSU's still OK? I've never had trouble with my current one, a SmartPower 350W. Are there other brands I should look at instead?

Antec still makes the good list on this forum, they are even considered a top unit:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 On other lists I have seen they are considered Good also, but not the best: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=108088 In my last build I went with Corsair and am very happy. Corsairs get great reviews, I think they are made by Seasonic. I have a couple of antecs in other computers and like you have never had a problem although they are a bit nosier than the Corsair i am using now. Kat |

How about this PSU, with rebates it's only $5 more than the Antec, and doesn't have the modular cabling which I don't know if I would need anyways:
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817139004 I've also decided on an E8400, and retail DVD-ROM. Still under $800 shipped. Might go with this DX10 video card: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814102715 I'd be OK getting Windows XP Home SP2 for this build, wouldn't I? Great power supply.
And good video card. Can't go wrong with those. |

Getting XP SP2 would be fine. SP3 won't start shipping for a few months, so expect to spend a good deal of time with Windows Update. Any reason why you don't want to try Vista? Modular cabling is nice, but not necessary.

Oh, I'll probably upgrade to Vista later. I guess I just need to be sure and pick components that can support either.

I would go for the better graphics card. Give your self some head room incase you want to get into some more serious stuff.

Here's an updated list:
Antec 300 case http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811129042 Intel P35 motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813121314 Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814102715 Corsair 550W psu http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817139004 E8400 cpu http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115037 (still not sure about what RAM to get, but this seems to be a good match) Mushkin 2x1GB DDR2 800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146118 Seagate 7200.10 250GB http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148262 Lite-on SATA DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106072 |

If I go with a Seagate 7200.11, will I notice a difference with the 32MB cache?
This is the one I was looking at: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148288 I won't need the extra 250GB of space. |

I doubt you would notice a huge difference. I think there is a 250 GB ES model, which is 32 mb cache. The ES series cost a bit more, but less than your paying for 500 GB. IMO it is not something I would pay a huge premium for if you dont need it.
That said I dont know all thta much about CAD/ 3D Rendering. If it requires constant access to data on the HD over time you might see some benefits. For gaming it helps with data refresh rates, but for gaming you would get a much bigger advantage from spending more on the video card so it would still be a low priority upgrade. Kat |

For a budget P35 motherboard, I wouldn't go with an Intel brand. I'd try something like the Gigabyte P35-DS3L. It has high quality capacitors, really good overclocking options, support for 45nm processors, and lots of features, except it doesn't have RAID. Good luck with your build.

Here's the Gigabyte newegg has for $90. Does have the PS/2 ports I'll need anyway, so I'll probably go with it instead of the Intel one. Don't need RAID.

Some more questions as I try to finalize my parts list:
To run the mobo/cpu at 1333 FSB, is 800 RAM fast enough? Or do I need 1066? Also, what is the difference between DDR3 and DDR4 for video card memory? Had a little room under my budget and now tweaking for performance. Thanks |

I noticed I got better frame rates with DDR4 video cards than DDR3, they are simply faster. You get what you pay for.

Well, I ordered my parts today. Went with the Radeon HD 3870 over the 3850, better reviews and still well under my budget. Also got a Seagate 7200.11 500GB HD with 32MB cache. Just out of curiousity, I looked up my old invoice (for the parts in my sig), back in 2004 the cost of my first build was exactly $0.10 cheaper than the cost this time around, talk about a coincidence!
Thanks for all the advice, I'll be sure to post how things work out. |

Well, my new system has been running fine for 2 months now, except for a couple weird issues. Once in a while I lose video a few minutes after boot-up, the system is still on and running but I can hear the gpu fan quitting and I get no display. Pressing the reset button fixes the problem. Has only happened maybe 3 times, and none recently.
Another weird thing is that putting the system in standby seems to shut it down. Fans all stop running as if turned off. Have to press the power button to bring it back up, to the windows logon screen. Not a real issue but I'm used to just moving the mouse to "wake-up" the system. Otherwise it runs great, I'm very happy with it. A bit louder than my old setup but runs much cooler. |
