First build, Requesting Assistance: Power on, ~40 seconds later = Automatic power off
Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums here. Hope to become an informed, contributing member in the months to come!
![]() For now, I actually have a question for you veterans out there. I completed my first build today, and when I power on the system, everything goes fine until about 40 seconds after powering on. It then shuts down automatically, no beeps or error messages come up beforehand. Before I go on, here is the list of components I used: - XFX 790i Ultra mobo - Intel Q9300 quad core proccessor - KFA2 GeForce 8800GT 512mb (changing to a 9800GTX that's on its way, but this is what I have for now) - 2gb x OCZ Dual Channel DDR3 2000mhz RAM - PCP&C 610 watt Silencer PSU - Hitachi 7.2k RPM 32mb cache HDD - Lite-On DVD/CD/etc. drive - Thermaltake Blue Orb CPU heatsink/fan - 5x Thermaltake 120mm case fans - Ultra CM Stacker 830 Full Tower ATX case Now, for the details... When I was putting together the PC, I removed the stock Nvidia heatsink on the motherboard because it did not allow my CPU fan/heatsink to fit. Now, I realise that some may be rolling their eyes right now at my stupidity, but the CPU heatsink/fan that I have is MASSIVE. It goes over my RAM slots even. Anyway, I figured with such huge CPU cooling, and 5 case fans blowing directly onto the motherboard from half a foot away, it wouldn't pose a problem. The rest of the build went normally, and there were no problems. As I mentioned before, I do have around 40 seconds before the system powers down. Just incase it WAS removing the motherboard heatsink that was causing an overheating, I checked my system tempratures quickly before the power-down occured. Both the CPU and Mobo tempratures looked fine. The CPU temprature was either 23 or 24 degrees celcius. I did not have enough time to get a good look at the mobo temprature, but it was within 5 degrees of the CPU temprature, if not even less than the CPU temp. Now, my guess is that I need a bigger power supply, so I'm going to try cutting the power off from my video card and see what happens. Any suggestions or insight are greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your help! -Jason Last edited by Angelsonecstasy; 05-06-2008 at 08:41 PM. |

Will do, thank you good sir. I will post results once I have done the trouble shooting.
Also, tried cutting mobo connection & power off from the HDD, Video card, DVD drive, and all 5 thermaltake case fans. Same problem, proceeding to do whats suggested in the linked thread posted above. ::crosses fingers:: EDIT: Figured it out. The heatsink was covering two Nvidia chips, MCP and SPP chips. I felt the chips when the system was turned on, and they were extremely hot to the touch. I am going to dremel a portion of the stock heatsink out in order to fit my CPU cooler, and that should do it I think. Last edited by Angelsonecstasy; 05-06-2008 at 11:27 PM. |
