PSU Problems on new biuld
Hi there, I'm a first time builder and I've come across a problem that me and my friends can't solve. I recently bought a bunch of new parts from newegg to really revamp my computer.
These are the new items I bought: Power and Cooling 750W PSU Core 2 Quad Q6600 EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640mb EVGA 790i MoBo 2 Gb DDR3 RAM and a new full case to put it in I installed all the parts (properly I hope) with some old parts from my last build (2 SATA HDs and DVD drives, and another 8800GTS for SLi), and flipped the switch.... nothing. All that happened was some clicking noise from the PSU. Of course I re-check everything, but nothing seemed to work. I finally ripped out the PSU and just tried using my old 430W PSU. I plug it in just to the MoBo and the MoBo lights turn on. I figured I was sent a DOA PSU, so I exchanged it for a new one. This was all about a week and a half ago, my new PSU came in (same one), I install it and guess what happens? Yep the clicking noise. Now I don't think newegg sent me another bad PSU, so what else can it be? I'm sorry I'm such a newbie at this, but I could really use some help please. Some miscellaneous things: Alot of my case conections I could find a spot to plug them into the MoBo. The Power LED eccpecally. My case had a 3 hole one, but my Mobo only had a place for 2... Other things like "speaker" and "micro SW" I had know clue what to do with. I don't think they're the cause of the problem, but they're annoying all the same. If someone knows what my problem is... please help! I miss my computer... Last edited by ekosz; 05-07-2008 at 02:12 PM. |

so did it work with your old PSU or not? try it with just one video card so it has enough power. If it did work then yea, you got a DOA PSU so get a new one
![]() Dont worry about the Power LED, its just annoying that some manufacturers don't allow for both size of connector, you'll either have to break the cable connector in half and shave off the middle part so it becomes 2 single pin connectors that you can plug into the motherboard or just do without a power LED. Not sure what the Micro SW is, theres a chance it could be the power SW, unless you have another one which says that? If it is the power switch then thats probably your problem.... Dont worry if you don't have any pins for the speaker some mobos just use the main speakers to output the beeps so they don't have any pins for the case speaker. I would try running only off of my old PSU, but it didn't even have a 8 pin for the CPU. I though it was DOA the first time, but now I've gotten a new one and it's doing the same problem...
Do I not have enough wattage? Its weird how my old one (when using strictly the 24 pin only) made the MoBo light up, but my buffed up one isn't doing anything... Any other ideas? |

don't worry about not having an 8 pin connector on your old PSU, you can use the 4 pin. The mobo should have come with 4 of the pins covered, plug it into the uncovered 4 and it should work fine (if your not sure which to plug into check the manual). The 8 pin is just to provide a little more juice but 4 wont stop it working.
If it works then, well it would appear you got 2 DOA's which seems unlikely but I cant think of any other explenation, unless there is a switch on them that your missing (I know, but I have to check ).if it doesn't work then we know the issue is not with the PSUs and its time to look elsewhere. Try removing all the components from the case like in shadows link and shorting the power SW pins on the mobo directly (use a screwdriver or someting, but be careful not to touch the board). If it works then your either shorting the mobo out on the case or the power SW on the case is broken. if it doesnt work......well then come back
