I know they're more expensive... but a Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) is a good investment. That way you get added surge protection as well as the ability to save anthing important should your power go out. I recommend APC for a UPS and I've been perfectly happy w/ Belkin as a surge protector.

For work I would agree, but a UPS is quite an exense for a home system. But I suppose it is really about what you use your computer for most. My system is basiclly used for gaming and a lot of on-line stuff, about the only think I ever lose is a half written e-mail that I can probably re-compose in 10 min or so.

I agree with others on brand, I have never really shopped for any specific surge protector. Generally when I build I just stop by Costco and get whatever they have. I think as long as you buy one designed for computers, not just a power strip with a breaker, you will be ok. Most come with a garentee for replacement if your computer is fryed, never had to use it, but if it is from a major brand it might be concidered added security.

ive been thinking about getting APC UPS myself... for a hundred bucks i can do myself that favor... will be doing audio recording etc and cant afford to lose data due to power outage, there are bound to be some this summer.

so do i need a UPS PLUS a surgeprotector, or does the ups handle that as well?

thx

The UPS should handle that.

will this have enough power to support my 46" LCD and my tower? I run my pc to my LCD so i obviously need the LCD to be powered in the event of a power outage. thanks

it would be fine for the tower; But the 46" LCD might be pushing the envelope a bit,
be sure to check the documentation for the LCD to verify power consumption

Had to refer to the label on the back of the LCD. Believe it says AC 110-120 Volts, 80 hz 240 watts

The power supply in the tower is a Nexus 600 watt

I really don't understand how any of these factors relate to each other, so I'm at all your your mercies. Thanks.

Try using the online UPS selector at the APC site below..

I already bought the APC 750, it's sitting in my living room.

There was no option for 46" LCD in the Monitor selecition, which really isn't surprising I guess. I chose dual monitor instead, cheapest option it gave me was APC BACK-UPS 1200VA 120V for $200
