Building pc running three monitors
I am trying to put a machine together and think I’m close. Here is the build, I am not sure I want or need these expensive video cards, as I am not a gamer. I want great video quality as I do internet auctions and need the best detail I can get. Have very good monitors, so all I need now is the box, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The following is the build with parts description and links to the individual parts at tiger direct if any one wants to look at the individual specs for the part inn questions. Hope I have followed forum protocol as best as I can.
M/B: Asus M3N-hd/hdmi nForce 750a SLI Socket AM@=MB http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...rkey=a455-2406 Processor: Amd Phenom X# 8450 2.1 Ghz 3.5MB Scoket AM@=CPU http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...y=cp2-am2-8450 Cooling: Thermaltake Ruby orb CPU Cooler for AMD or Intel http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...rkey=t925-2032 Memory : Corsair TWINX 3062 PC 6400 ddr2 800 MHz ( 3 gigs) http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...srkey=c13-2022 HD: Seagate 250GB Serial ATA w/NCQ 7200/8MB/SATA-3G http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...key=tsd-250as6 Case: Ultra XBlaster Nid Tower case http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...y=ult33178PSU: Power Up 800w power supply w/2 80mm/Blue Primary Op: LITE-ON DH-20A$H_)* 20 DVDRW w/Lightscribe http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...srkey=l12-1150 Video cards: (2) XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB PCIe w/Duel link DVI http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...rkey=p450-9802 Please let me know what you think..Also do the video cards have to be in PCIe x16 slots for what I want to do?Will a good video card work in any PCIe slot? |

Those GPUs must go in either a PCIe x16 1.x or PCIe x16 2.0 slot (your mobo has 2 PCIe x16 2.0). They would not fit in a PCIe x 1, x4, x8 etc.
I think for your needs going with dual 9800GTX's is kind of overkill. You could definitely get by with 8800's, and probably less. |

video cards
Thank for the input, what do you think of the rest of the build? I understand i will need to disable The SLI for the duel cards to funtion the way i want them to.What is the procedure to do it?is it complicated?Would a different motherboard be a better choice?

If you're not gaming at all, you can scale back on the cards by a lot. A couple of Geforce 8500s will get the job done. You can skip SLI simply by unchecking the option in the Nvidia software.
Your build is ok, but I would highly suggest dropping that power supply. PowerUps are terribly low quality. For the cards I suggested, this would be great: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...=corsair%20450

updated build for three monitor system
After careful consideration and all of your valuable input, I put a machine together and think I got it. Here is the build, I changed the video cards as you all recommended, as I am not a gamer. I want great video quality as I do internet auctions and need the best detail I can get. Have very good monitors, so all I need now is the box, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The following is the build with parts description and links to the individual parts at tiger direct if any one wants to look at the individual specs for the part inn questions I have supplied the links to them. If anyone notices I left out a valuable component please let me know. My brain is fried after all the research and internet browsing for parts. Hope I have followed forum protocol as best as I can. I really do appreciate your help!

Looks like a good list. The only thing to look out for is if that CPU heatsink will fit or block things on the motherboard. You will know when you try to install it.

Merged your new thread into this one.
Looks like a fine list. I would swap for a SATA burner instead of IDE. |

SATA burner vs IDE
What are the differences between the IDE and SATA burners?

The drive itself is the same. IDE is being phased out right now in favor of SATA, so there is no reason to buy old tech.

3 Monitors
Well they make single video cards that can handle up to 4 video cards.
I think Visiontek makes an ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 video card with 4 outputs. Also I think ATI has something like an inexpensive FireMV™ 2400 which is a 2d video card with 4 outputs. These are low profile half length video cards designed to run cool. A lot of the stock trading systems use them. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3209&p=13 http://ati.amd.com/products/firemvseries/specs.html I think this PNY NVS 440 is suppose to be better if you want 8 monitors: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...440+&x=14&y=29 All these cards cost over $400.00. The PNY NVS 440 seems to have a better overal review. The PNY NVS 440 did not say it was Vista Certified. Last edited by piasabird; 07-15-2008 at 10:43 PM. |

if you live in the US get your parts at newegg, your motherboard choice is $70 cheaper.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...3N-HD%252fHDMI think about a different HDD, your choice only has an 8mb cache. for about $15 you can put in this one and double the capacity. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288
