Ultimate Crappy PC
Trying to make the cheepest PC I can. So far i can everythiogn but an OS for like 280 delivered. All new parts are new and from New Egg. Really it's not going to be that bad of a pc. But i need help w/ the OS. I have plenty of old copies of xp laying around but i think using one of those liscences would go against the spirit of this project. Anyone know of any free operating systems that can run software designed for windows? like word, excell, ect? It would be a huge plus if it looked and acted like xp as well.

Ubuntu or Mandriva Linux distros. Open Office does a good job of emulating MS Office. All are free.

There are tons of different versions of linux that you can use.
It won't be like windows though. As for office programs, you can use the free alternative: open Office. I would make sure you're at least trying to get quality parts in this build. If not, you might have a few problems arise. EDIT: Beat to the punch.
