What programs will your student be using ?
He/she might need an Open GL card instead of a mainstream gamer card. What you're looking for in an LCD monitor is color accuracy. I would check out this LCD since it promises the necessary accuracy at an affordable price : http://www.answers.com/topic/lcd-mon...y-review-lg-19 Even if you can't find it where you are the specs will give you some idea of what to look for in an LCD for design work.

If you're into graphic design the 2nd choice has a Quad Core opposed to the Dual Core and has an ATi Card which are supposed to produce better colours or something. The speed of the RAM is probably the same but just check which is faster. The only advantage of the 1st build are it has 2 drives where you could do a RAID for extra speed or protection. My advice would be the 2nd build as it has a much better processor and a graphics card which is a generation above the 8800GT.
On the other hand if you're building this yourself and are not planning to play any games might want to look at some of the FireGL cards or nvidias Quattro series. Could save yourself some cash doing it that way. |

It looks like you can use a good all purpose video card and you won't have to break the bank to get one. Before you buy have the student find out if school has any preferences. If they do your student may also get a discount. |
