Question same old thing

Hello world,

Well I am happy to find this place. Totally cool. Ok you guess it; I am a wannabe geek and proud of it. Of course I am going to build my first PC here soon; I am a graphic artist and wanted some opinions on my choices, thanks in advance. Note I was going to water cool it but decided against that because price and scared of frying the stuff i am trying to cool. Sound and loudness are not really an issue. I have a crappie dell dimension right now and it is somewhat loud. Some stuff you might not care about but I wanted to follow the rules and give you all as much info as possible.

Welcome to PCM. Good start to your list, I have a few ideas.

First, I'd swap for this hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...200.11%2b500gb The larger cache is worth it.

Second, I wouldn't bother Crossfiring low end cards. Check out a single card like the HD4850. A bit more expensive, but very worth it right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121253

Finally, you don't need such an expensive power supply. The Corsair 650 would be a great unit instead.

Using multiple ATi video cards in one machine (like you indicated in your parts list).

It is the equivalent of nVidia's SLI.

I have little experiene with CrossFire or more than 2 monitors, so someone else will have to help out on this front.

As for whether you 'have' to CrossFire the two cards - there is no reason to not. It takes no extra work and allows the cards to process graphics cooperatively.

Mail in Rebates, sorry. Those 4000 series cards are the hot new thing right now, came out about 3 weeks ago and have since dropped from $200 to about $150 after rebates. However, if you don't game you may not need cards that good. Depends on your graphic design programs' needs.

Ah, well if you need multiple monitors, then those cards are fine.

As for the power supply, it can handle more hard drives and RAM. Though I think 7 drives and 16gigs is overkill.

You don't need the RAM heatsinks or the RAM fan either, I'd drop them. If you really want some neat lights you can get the fan, but most RAM comes with preattached heatsinks that removing would void your warranty I'd bet.

Mushkin has some cool heatsinks on their ram, you might like that. They're top notch manufacturer as well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146731

G.SKILL heatspreaders > Mushkin heatspreaders

Either way, they're both solid brands.
