Reapeating long beep on new build
Hi,
I made a new pc with the following specs; Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L AMD X2 5000+ 2GB OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2 RAM Asus 8800GS I can't get it to boot. I get repeating long beep (or what I guess are long beeps, they are about 1.5 seconds long). Well, first of all I got 3 long beeps, then a pause, then repeating long beeps. The only info on 3 long beeps I could find was a keyboard error, so I tried using a usb keyboard. Now I just get repeating long beeps. The motherboard manual says this is due to the graphics card not being inserted properly but 1) it is! 2) it also does this with the onboard vga After a google search, most people suggest this is a RAM problem, however I have tried swapping ram with different RAM, and same problem. Things I have tried are: I took the motherboard out of the case and removed everything apart from the cpu, Ram, power switch and power connections and graphics card- still no difference. I tried using the onboard vga, removing the graphics card - still no difference. I tried using one stick of Ram, trying either stick in either slot, then trying a stick from my pc which I know works in either slot - no difference. Tried using a different psu - no difference. The cpu is compatible with the motherboard, the OCZ ram isn't on the official compatibility list (which has a note saying they are unable to test every brand of ram- which is probably why). Yet the RAM I have tried instead, and which I know works, IS on the list. So I'm guessing this is either a faulty motherboard or CPU. I'm just wondering which one I need to return- any ideas? |

You can look up the beep codes here:
Welcome to BIOS Central* BIOS means Basic Input Output System. BIOS is actually firmware, the software that is programmed into a ROM (Read-Only Memory) chip built onto the motherboard of a computer. BIOS is what makes the system run an initial Power-On Self-Test of the computer, initialize circuits, load the boot program from the boot disk, and then handle low-level I/O to peripheral controllers such as keyboard and display. http://bioscentral.com/

I think you listed the wrong motherboard: that one's Intel and has no onboard video...

One time when I upgraded a friends CPU to a Brisbane Athlon 64 X2 it wouldn't post with the same error code as you get. A BIOS update fixed it.
